Hi Guys

I had a Physio session today, giving me additional exercises to do in the lead up to my TKR Op (24th July).
I've been instructed to lie down flat on my bed for 30 minutes each day and to encourage my knee to lie flat :-)
I think i may be able to squeeze that in............if nothing else it give me an excuse for a little lie down, and not to feel guilty about it! :-)
They also issued me with 2 new walking sticks so i get the hang of walking with 2 sticks post op.

Hope everyone is well xx

Ah, knees lying flat - that is a weird sensation! I am glad you have seen someone about this, it is important to get the the muscles surrounding the joint as strong as possible as that helps the post-op recovery. Have you tried the pillow-under-the-knee, point your toes to the ceiling and then tense your thigh muscle so your leg rises from the bed? I was told I could not leave the hospital after my first synovectomy until I could do that - I mastered it two years later but blagged my way out anyway! I still do that exercise on both sides even now, I am sure it helps me. Ask someone who knows about your case before you try it though, please.

So, Juliahod, it's all becoming real now, yes? DD
Have you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben

    Hi DD

Yes,that is one of the newer excercise I have to do.........along with sitting on a high seat and encouraging my legs to swing backwards and forwards! ;-)

It is seeming more real now,and I'm sure the next 6 weeks will fly by!

I hope you're getting on ok with your splints xx

Another one to try is use a rolled up towel placed under your ankles this can be done in bed or lying on settee, try to do this for 10 minutes, this helps to straighten leg.Physio will give you exercises post op to try and get leg straightened to 0 degree and a bend of 90 degree or more. What results can be achieved depend on state of knee before op and how much effort if is put in after op.Good luck Julia and Kathe for your forthcoming TKR's.

The pre-op exercises are important as they get/keep the muscles in good nick ready for afterwards. My surgeon's registrar got very excited when I managed some straight leg raises the day after my knee revision. I knew from past experience that it was all the key to getting out  Hope it goes well for you.
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Kath...........best of luck for 23rd, I hope you have the kind of care I am, I believe it really will pay benefits :-) xx

Barbara12..........any ideas how long you have to wait now?

Earthspirit........the exercises the others have suggested are brilliant........i have ised some of them before after my 3 arthroscopies..........ask your GP/ Consultant first, but I think they sound like they might be good for you too. x

    Julia

Wow it is so near now isnt it, bet youre kind of excited and kind of nervous too, or maybe that would be me?
Havent heard of the lying on bed flat exercise before...At the gym I do my quads, straight leg, bent leg ones and also hydrotherapy twice a week too...The walking sticks, my dad didnt get that before his but guess different areas do things differently...
I hope this all prepares you as much as can be...

    Good luck
