The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything.
If you can lay down at night knowing in your heart that you made someone's day just a little bit better, you know you had a good day.

hi there
yes that article is very encouraging so really if you can keep your gut bacteria in check it will count for alot, i heard that RA can also be triggered by incorrect dental care ( gum disease ).
Lynn x0 -
that is quite amazing & yes not just poor dental care but the gum problems which come from smoking are believed to be a contributory factore.
i had tooth and gum damage which was treated but an ongoing dental probem. my own RA hurt the tiny joints in my teeth, once triggered and let to me having agonising tooth pain. part of my ow tooth health has been to get deep root cleaning for years.
at one point i became almost fanatical in brushing my teeth and ended up damaging the gums, which led to more pockets, allowing more bacteria to flourish. i had severe dental trauma when i was 12 yrs old0 -
Hi Elna
thank you for this article. It did make interesting reading and I really do hope that they can totally eliminate the disease.

I have long been sure it has something 'to do with' the stomach - how many of us also have IBS or IBD????
Thanks

Interesting!
I may have experienced more than a few bacterial changes when I was just 2, after drinking unpasteurised milk while on holiday with my family on a Shropshire farm. Everyone else was fine, but I had such chronic diarrhoea that I had to be investigated in hospital under general anaesthetic. Nothing was found, but my Mum's always wondered whether that episode provided some sort of trigger, although I didn't develop PsA until ten years later and after an attack of psoriasis aged 5. I've had suspected IBS too, but latest medical opinion is that it was sensitivity due to years of ibuprofen as I've been fine since being prescribed Lansoprazole.
Well, it's too late for me, but it's good to know that research is ongoing! And if there's anyone reading this who's having tummy trouble while on anti-inflammatories, it may be worth mentioning 'proton pump inhibitor' to your doc.
Best wishes,
PhoebePsA (psoriatic arthritis) and other things since 1990. Happy to help when I can :-)0 -

Joints in teeth? Could you elaborate on that, please, earthspirit? I've never heard of joints in teeth.
Elna - thanks for the link. Very heartening to think that, for some, this could be nipped in the bud. I do hope so.If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Earthspirit i got arthritis in my jaw and its kicking me about just now and has effected the teeth so please could you is the word elaborate cus it might be what's wrong with my jaw and help me. I didn't know there were bones in your teeth so it would be good, specially as just now I got so much trouble with mine. Thanks for saying it cus it might explain a lot. x0 -
I have IBS also have a terrible medical history of operations on my intestines most of which have been removed.Best joke I ever read, "With that information and a diagnosis of spondylosis, your doctor can develop a treatment plan" or back in reality totally ignore you. Is ok I have a sense of humour and a boxing glove, not defeated yet.0

nobody seems to knoiw about the joints in the teeth lol
its the bits where the teeth are held in the actual jaw and although not a conventional joint, is a joint all the same
about 3 yrs prior to my own DX for RA i was a regular at dental hospital and suffered a great deal from neck damage, which was believed to also be the cause of severe facial neuralgia and also deafness in one ear and problems with that same half of my face turning pure white every now and again.
i had a mess up of crowns bridges etc and was having deep root cleaning and investigation for pain. it was only post dx that the dentist told me about the joints in my teeth and agreed that it was this which had caused me a vast amount of pain of no real origin, in my face & neck etc.
i actually ended up wiggling teeth loose to escape the pain (the teeth had nothing wrong with them)
i would go to surgery to have them properly taken out and they would literally fall out.
it was a serious headf*ck time & i thought i was going mad. was like selfharm and im really not that sort of person and the doctors dentists were all amazed by what i was doing.
shame nobody ever listened to me & it took them a lifetime to say oh yea you have severe rheumatoid arthritis.0 -
omg! so thats probably whats wrong with me too! I have ra in my jaw causing pain and stiffness but i only have 11 teeth left which are all wobbly snd i will probably end up with dentures soon despite all the gruelling treatment ive had at dentist in past. I think not being able to maintain proper hygiene hasnt helped either when i havent been able to brush due to flare ups in my hands. Ill ask my dentist about it when i next visit. many thanks for info :shock:0

Hello barnesy and welcome to the forum. I'm sorry to hear of your dental problems. I've had RA/OA in my jaw for many, many years but I still have my own teeth (well, most of them).
I think I'm right in saying that the main cause of tooth decay is gum disease and, if you've not been able to keep up with good oral hygiene, that itself would explain why your teeth are falling out.
I think I would be in the same situation as you but for the arrival of the electric toothbrush which finally allowed me to brush properly and brush the bits that my arthritic hands couldn't reach without it. If you don't have one I'd get one asap if you want to hang on to your remaining teeth. I'd also be thinking of changing my dentist if he/she hasn't pointed this out to you.If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.
