Oh dear, poor you, that is not a nice thing to be confronted by. What an extortionate cost for something that you may not be able to use - I'm with Del on this, experiment first with a shop-bought model, they are much cheaper and see if that helps. (()) DD

    Hi Val

I worked with a fellow whom had one of these guards , He said it did not works but i feel maybe he did not use it .You can purchase a tooth whitener kit which has these gum shields in the pack maybe you could try this first , and if you do not like .do not bother with the dentist .

    Val

they tried to get me to buy one of these too when my jaw 'went', but I have managed perfectly well without by TRYING hard to relax my mouth last thing at night as I drop off and taking my anti-inflams.

I initially thought I had toothache, but was away at the time and had a dental apt already booked for a few weeks time. One day on cleaning my teeth it clicked and stuck almost shut!! It was agony and soft food ony till it sorted.

Another dentist tried to get my eldest to have one too.

Tis your choice though and i really hope it eases for you soon :(

    Love

    So sorry Val.

My Mum has a toothguard because, like you, she was grinding her teeth in the night which gave her very bad headaches. It certainly works well for her and she has used it for years now. Although a custom made one may well be best in the long term if you can afford it, I think that, given what you have said about gagging, the suggestions about trying something "over the counter" first are sensible.

Hope you get some relief from this soon.

Hi val, I've got a really strong gag reflex and my dentist cut the guard at the back so it doesn't provoke the reflex. It works fine and stops the headaches I get from tooth grinding, also toothache as well. Go for it. Once they've made the mould you've got it for life and, although it seems a lot of money, will save you money in the long term.

I had one a few years ago. I used to clench and grind my teeth at night, still do!

I used to put the guard in at night and each and every morning it was in my bed somewhere!

So not a great success here really. Not sure I would fork out £200 for one.

Good luck with the rugby one they are very similar.
How come I'm over the hill and rapidly going down it, when I don't even recall reaching the summit?

    hi Val,

that seems a little pricey to me my son had one last year and it cost him around £70, it does work but dentist advised him to rest off it now and again for a week, has if used all the time it can become ineffective.

    Hi Val,

I have a mouth guard. My dentist recommended it as I was experiencing jaw pain, chewing problems and apparently was grinding my teeth at night.

He apologised that the NHS wishes to charge £200+ and said he wasn't happy about that.

He then offered to make that part of my treatment Private and charged me £90 for the guard.

His advice was also to wear it durin the day for short periods, to avoid problems when wearing it at night.

it helps... to me it was worth it ... and yes, there are some nights when it doesn't stay in all night, but he said that didn't matter (and it makes for a giggle when we hunt the missing mouth guard  )

This does not augur well for you, the gag reflex is an important natural process but it can be inconvenient - I cannot cope that well with tongue scraping for the same reason. Keep trying valval, if you can avoid further dental problems then that would be good. ((())) DD

Val, did you try off the shelf one? The thing about one that is moulded to your mouth is that it will fit exactly so won't touch your tongue at the back. Dentist cut off moulding for back teeth as that is where it causes gagging and it still works. I promise you, you will be fine with it :) I never thought I would be able to use one!

    Hi Val,
my self and 2 of my children have these guards they are a real help to us.
We all clench and grind our teeth, we were told replacement ones on the NHS were £80, your dentist is very expensive.
The difference I found between the sports guards and the dentist ones are the sports guards are much harder as they are to resist impact, there may be softer ones, also they are not as comfortable as the fitted ones as they are not made to fit.
My guard gets chewed through in a few months so I really did need it, it has stopped my fillings needing repaired so often as I am not able to grind my teeth so that is a big help.
Before the guard I had a lot of jaw pain and could not open my mouth much.
During the day I relax my jaw until it feels really loose, It was a surprise how clenced I hold my jaw without realising I do it.
If I forget to wear my guard I notice the difference, using the guard has completly fixed my jaw.
I agree with other posts try a soft sports guard.
My guard is for the upper teeth but my daughter got one recently which is for the lower teeth, do not know if it is for dental reasons or just an improvement in design.
She had no problems wearing hers from the beginning nor did I but the other child took a long time to stop spitting it out in her sleep.
Best joke I ever read, "With that information and a diagnosis of spondylosis, your doctor can develop a treatment plan‏" or back in reality totally ignore you. Is ok I have a sense of humour and a boxing glove, not defeated yet.
