What do you do for fun/sport/hobbies?

I used to do a lot of sport - I coached judo, played squash, went to the gym, went rock climbing, cycling holidays... you get the idea.

Now I struggle to walk round the supermarket.

I have taken up crochet, and have almost completed a British Sign Language course which I hope to follow with the next level of it, and hopefully do some free lance work in a few years.

I would love to find a sport, or a hobby, that takes me out of the house, like sport used to. I can't stand or walk much, I use crutches and sometimes a wheelchair.

What wonderful things do you do?

There are opportunities to do wheelchair sports at most local leisure centres. I have thought about doing something occasionally myself, but as my hands are as bad as my feet. I am unsure as to what I would actually be able to participate in.

I hope you find something you can do. The other place to ask is physio, they usually have a notice board of activities.

It's quite depressing..... having myself been "extremely" active as a youngster - doing many many sports....

Like you, I now find a walk around the supermarket difficult... and tiring.

I will watch this thread for ideas.... thanks

Sorry no sports but at least you would be out and about.
I have a car, use my 4 wheel rollator or on long hilly routes my scooter so I'm not exactly mobile either

Riding for the Disabled until my knee revision. That led to being on two committees doing about 3 - voluntary - jobs on each. Now just riding an exercise 'horse'.

Going for walks but taking the wheelchair for sit down bits.

    Watching/listening to cricket and rugby.
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

I used to play football, Referee, was president of the local youth football club and managed and trained a kids team. I also played golf, snooker, pool and darts, and enjoy speedway ( as a sponsor/fan not as a rider!).
Now I struggle to play a game of cards, pretty good this arthritis lark ain't it!
I'm getting to international standard at this sitting around and aching game though!

    Hi HM

Good for your completing a BS language course. My 32 year old daughter is learning it too and loves it. She now meets up with a couple of the people in the class and over a coffee they practice signing. One of the people in the class brings a friend to the coffee sessions, who uses sign language all the time.

I have OA and at 61, enjoy looking after my grandaughter, mowing the lawn, looking after the garden and occasionally going to the allotment. Stretching exercises at home, practically on a daily basis have, I am sure kept me going. I like to ride my bicycle locally and walk but because of spinal problems walking is quite hard work for me now but I persevere.I am not in pain particularly but am "wobbly" and it is an effort after a while. I take part in four forums which I find interesting. I have a couple of cleaning jobs which although very hard work, it is a good feeling to still be able to earn my "own" money. I laugh a lot which is good for me. :D Hubby makes me laugh most days - I love his sense of humour. I enjoy baking and cooking. Nothing too fancy though. Often tastes better than it looks.

So I do not do anything really exciting but I enjoy my life and feel useful and this means so much to me.

    Elna x

I’m not to well at the moment following a heart attack and now in a flair
I suffer with RA PA FM lung disease and heart disease. I’m with you guys.
We where so active. I saw my heart specialist last week he said Colin you
Are just so unlucky to get all this stuff life’s not fair “his words” Well I’ve had
a rotten few years. It seems the more I do to help myself I get another illness
or medical problem. However you have got to keep going. I climbed mountains
and now have difficulty getting up my front step. Although I use a wheelchair I’m
not wheelchair bound. And that doctors right I have been unlucky. But its up to
me weather or not I get on with it. The way I see it is I have these things that I or
the doctors cant fix there’s nothing I can do about it. Don’t get me wrong I’ve done
my share of moping and staying in bed feeling sorry for myself. Mrs C says I could
be a professional moaner or is that just men in general. Even my social life was
full until I got sick sometimes I wondered how I found the time to go to work.
First thing I done when I got my wheelchair was visit a cafe in the town centre where
I live. Every morning at 9 am just sitting and watching the people and feeling so sorry for
myself. Then I had my first heart attack and ended up in Rehab some months later. I got
through the rehab And onto activity for life in the community. First off I met lots of nice
people. It all started real slow They knew I had all these problems so they built my
time and what I was doing round them. Indoor bowls, Aqua aerobics, even with the bad lungs I was doing it “ not up to the standard of the others but I was going to the baths once a week and it was getting me out of the house and meeting people. Next thing I took up Tai Chi you can do that sitting down if you need to. Next thing I was stretching and bending pushing and pulling, Tai Ching swimming bowling using gym equipment and doing all sorts of things but most important I was getting out meeting people three days a week. Feeling like I thought I would never feel again it also gave me back a strange sort of feeling like I was helping myself and no longer resigned to my health ruling me. So go on phone your gym today. If you go through your GP its free for 3 months and you cant imagine how many chronically ill people are in our gyms so don’t be scared.

Gosh I have had lots of hobbies over the years, jewelery making, crochet, making my own clothes, reading, cycline, camping, dog walking, jointed teddybear making, wine making.

Some of these things I have naturally moved away from as I had got fed up of it but some I have had to give up due to OA.

The things I enjoy now are: wine making, dog walking if someone else holds the leads, reading and helping my daughter make jewelery.

Reading has and always be my 'thing' I would be lost without books!
How come I'm over the hill and rapidly going down it, when I don't even recall reaching the summit?

I've lost walking, cycling and dancing but can still read (I thank my belovéd with all my heart for my Kindle), listen to music and do puzzles (both written and the jigsaw-type). I also talk to the friends I have made via here - at least one hour per day is spent on the phone to someone - now how fab is that? DD
Have you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben

MY daughter also started the BSL course but due to going back to university to study Japanese she hasn't pursued it.

I loved gymnastics and trained many hours a day. Now I could not even do a headstand !

I also used to love dancing- can't really do that anymore either.

I have however started drawing and painting and currently attending a watercolour painting workshop.

I'm never bored though. I can't remember the last time I was!

I refuse to be beaten by this bloody thing - I still enjoy gardening (veg - brought a rotator because I can't dig anymore). I put a polytunnel up early this year and that has been a real pleasure.

I am a keen photography and try and take the camera with me wherever I go. My biggest hobby though is beekeeping - amazing hobby and with some good by products :-)

Oh yes, photography is a love I still have. I treated myself to a 2nd hand telephoto lens, so I can set up a camping chair in a field and take wildlife photos :D

I must look into the sport side of things. A lot of things are so expensive though! I quite fancy a session at my local gym, where they put gym equipment into the shallow swimming pool and you use it with the support of the water. I know I would be a lot slower than most people but it might be helpful. Unfortunately it's at the ridiculous time of 7.30am

    Off to do some googling...
