Weird Hand

I was just wondering if any of you with Osteoarthritis in the thumb and hand has come across what has been happening with my fingers at the moment, the thing is that even when at rest for the past 3 weeks the 2 outside fingers have twisted inwards and the finger next to it has twisted to the outside so its like I have 3 fingers all under each other.

the Knuckles keep popping and cracking and soon after im sure that the finger in question has twisted a bit more the wrong way,

Its not too painful only when the knuckle popping and cracking is going on, but I am finding its freaking out the family members and I have been asked whats going on with the hand and to be honest I have no idea, so I thought I would ask on here to see if anybody else has had this and could let me know whats going on.

I have to firmly press on a flat surface to make them straighten out, but as soon as I move the hand the fingers just pop back into their weird grouping,

Its very mysterfying and if anyone can help please can they explain it, as I cant get to the dr for 3 weeks to ask them whats going on.

It has to be my bad hand that weird things are happening to.

Thanks for any help with this.

all the best

Julie

Oh dear, I honestly don't know. I have PsA in my hands and some problem in my wirsts but that's it. I have read about Dupuytren's Contracture here, I think that is where the tendons across the palm contract and pull fingers inwards but whether this is what is happening to you or not I don't know. I'm not a doctor, Bounce, and I don't often recommend googbyngaskjeeves-ing things but that might be worth a look, just in case. I hope that someone with a little more knowledge will be able to help and I wish you well. DD

    Thanks for your reply DD,

Its just it is very weird and I just need to figure out a way of Straightening the fingers back in line, as people are noticing, and I dont like people staring at me, even if its just at my weird hand at the moment.

I didnt mention in the post that I have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome and I had a completely failed operation to sort that out and I have a lot of scar tissue as a constant reminder that the surgeons wont try it again because of the amount of scar tissue in the area.

That might be a factor, I shall try what you said about searching out about it.

    Thanks for your help.

Just a thought. Have you any wrist splints? They might help to keep the fingers straight.
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

I have dupuytrens , right hand has all the fingers bent down past my wrist and left hand heading the same way ! Mine are fixed like that though and can't straightened at all . I'm a RAer so dupuytrens is not solely an OA affliction . Jillyb

    Hi bounce,
I have RA, and the fingers on my left hand have been like that, (folded over each other) for some time now, and those on the right are going the same way. It's really difficult to pick things up and grasp. I do have physio exercises for them, but they haven't helped so far.
Sorry, that's not much help to you, is it?
    Wishing you well,
    Numpty

Hi everyone,Thanks for replying to my query, I will be doing some more research on what the thing going on with my hand is, but at least I now have some pointers to check out for a start.

Numpty I must admit that you are the closest to what my hand is like, and nothing is working as I have been doing hand exercises too and you relax the hand and ping they fold under each other, and yes I do have extra problems lately with grasping things, I am dropping things more often at the moment, so its fun. I think I might invest in some earplugs for my brother as he has been hearing just how colourful my language can get, for some of the words he has to ask me what I just said, so I tell him Norwegian or Fresian, but I wont tell him the English version though as he hates curly hair.

I can rule out Dupuytrens though, and I know im lucky in that respect, I do wear a hand and wrist splint at work to help save further damaging my thumb and aggrevating my carpal tunnel, but it comes to just below the hand knuckles.

Its getting to the stage very quickly where I cant trust the grip in my right hand at any point as the grip isnt there as its just like using a dodgy thumb and 2 fingers at present.

Thanks for all your help and advice I do appreciate it, if I can find out what the heck it is I will certainly pass it on, it would be nice to know what it is.

    All the best

    Hi Barbara,

I must admit this forum is worth its weight in gold, you can get more information and help then you ever can dream of and the best thing is its from people who are in the same boat as you so they really understand you and they all go out of their way to help.

Something that the NHS just doesnt have time to do, but thankfully there are people who can help and explain things better and give moral support where possible.

These are the main reasons I love this forum and everyone in it,

You always can find out the answers to any questions here, and its so very comforting when you go into worrymode,

    :D

    Love Julie. XX
