Hmmm, how long is a piece of string? I don't take it but those who do seem to be on a variety of doses which I guess fits the pattern of everyone reacting differently to the same drug. I do know that people take it quite early in the evening so as to avoid the drugged morning fug which this med can cause. Is this a new med for you? DD

I know that one's body can get used to a drug so it needs more and more to gain the same effect, I reckon this is a question for your GP as he/she will know your full history etc. I know what you mean about sleep though, mine is patchy, uncomfortable and as for feeling refreshed - ye gods. What's that when it's at home? :) DD

People are prescribed amitriptyline for various reasons. I was, to slow my body down because I was suffering from IBS D and it was suggested that I took it for one year and after that time I weaned myself off it and all is well. It did make me sleep better than I sometimes do, so was a bonus for me. I started off on 10mg and went upto 25mg and that sorted my symptoms of the IBS D. It can be prescribed for migraines too. Higher dosages can be prescribed for depression. The gasto told me that I could go upto 50mg should I wish to do so, but I never needed to.

What dosage are you on at the moment and for how long have you been on it?

The happiest people don't have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything.

If you can lay down at night knowing in your heart that you made someone's day just a little bit better, you know you had a good day.

    Heya

I've been on it now for about 5 months. I had to start off at a low dosage and slowly increase it. I'm currently on 25mg once at night but I was supposed to increase this week but instead I am adding something else to the mix. I did help me sleep at first but now it doesn't seem to have much effect.

I've been on Amitriptyline for many years now and started at 10mg and gradually went up to where I'm at now which is 60mg. But it's took me a few years to get to there. So what I'm trying to say is, you need to start low!!

Im on 50mg it took me a while to get there, it is for my nerve pain in my hands feet and scalp. It hasnt completely gone but is much better.

It helps me get off to sleep but I still wake up in pain.

I have gone from 10 to 50 since September, I am sane because I sleep. My gp says my dose is 'moderate'. Bring it on some more. If you have nerve pain it switches it off at night.

I take nortriptyline tabs each is 25mg I tend to average between 2-4 a day but my GP says I can go up to 9, It's odd stuff as it works well for my neck OA but does **** all for my knees?, I also find if I take more than 4 my mouth tastes kind of metalic, I also had really mad vivid dreams when I first started using it, it would mix up things I'd done that day with my dreams and I'd wake up really confused wondering if it was real or not, oddly I don't get them now??.

:( went to the GP and talked to her about my dosage. i am taking citalopram 40mg and it appears there is an issue with the combination of citalopram and amitriptyline that causes heart problems.. i have already been told i have an ectopic heart beat, no danger but not very pleasant.. so i have been taken off the amitriptyline and told to take nytol to help me relax so i can get some sleep as i have several health issues on top of the OA and FM

I'm on Amitryptilline for tension headaches so only take 10mg. I've just had to take a couple recently, after 18 months or more of not having any problems (which, given a stressful 2 years when I lost my dad to cancer and my husband was then diagnosed, is something of a miracle to me) but the problem is despite the low dose they knock me out, which is great until the morning after!
