how much is too much?

I've been doing aquafit once a week (it's specifically for arthritis) and done one session of wheelchair basketball. I enjoy both but I just feel worse.

But now I want to sit in a corner and cry :-/ Last few days I've been taking max doses of paracetamol and codeine and it hasn't even touched it. Struggling to move around inside my own house.

Think I will ring the doctor tomorrow but as we are TTC I don't know what else I could take.

could it be the payback from the exercises?
I hope so as that should be quite short lived.
Hope things ease for you soon..
    Best wishes

Only you can determine how much is too much and that takes time to discover. I know what I can no longer manage - indeed the list grows ever longer - but that's my list. Yours will be different and you are the best-placed to find out what is possible and what is not. I gave up swimming years ago, oddly enough what finished that off for me was hydrotherapy - 48 hours stranded on the sofa thanks to the after-effects was not worth the ten minutes or so of relief in the pool.

Be kind to yourself, keep doing what you are doing but maybe reduce the length of time you are doing it? That may be an answer. DD

In answer to your question, Harlansmummy, I think maybe you've done too much too soon. Exercise is good and necessary and helps to keep the pain levels down BUT, if you're starting something new, you have to ease yourself into it gently. I expect you've been using muscles that haven't had a decent workout for some time and they are, understandably, protesting. Right now you need some decent pain relief but, next time, go easy and/or maybe just do short sessions until your body has got used to it. If you're enjoying it, then don't give up on it entirely.
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Yes I agree with Tony. You are probably using parts of the body that haven't been used for a long time. I did hydrotherapy course and I felt the same as you after each session as it is only once a week.

There is no risk of me giving up - even with the pain I mentally feel a lot better :D

I've made a doctor app for Monday, albeit not with my regular GP, to discuss different pain meds.

Meantime, it's basketball on Sunday :)

Sorry you are feeling so bad now. I hope it wears off soon. I agree with the others. Take it a bit easier next time. Glad to hear you aren't going to give up though. Take care.

I had a similar experience when I took up Tai Chi - that gentle exercise that everybody finds so good - totally screwed my SI joints up to start with which left me reeling as loads of really old ladies seemed much happier with it than I...I stood back and did it in baby steps and in the end, me and Tai Chi got on quite well - I even still do some of it now 5 years later. I love that you are keeping going, just try meeting it half way for now - frustrating when you find something new and exciting adn want to throw all of you into it...build up though, as my OH frequently reminds me when I get frustrated not being able to give something my all - slow and steady wins the race, in this case, it really does. Good luck with discovering your new sports and enjoy that rush afterwards, it's wonderfully liberating isn't it?!

    Hi Harlansmummy

I do aquaexercise and believe me its quite strenuous but cos its in hydrotherapy water you dont feel it at the time....Some people in my class cant do all the exercises our instructors demonstrate as its simply not doable!! You sound like youve been puting in a lot of effort to exercise, maybe your body is saying hang on.....
Go and see your doctor if the meds isnt helping they may be able to advise you....
I hope this get better for you...

Well when I went to basketball yesterday I told them I had overdone it the week before and they assured me.no-one would think any less of me if I took a few breaks. So I paced myself, had a couple of breaks and felt slightly less wrecked atvthe end of it ;-)

Also got in tosee doctor (although not my usuall fab one) and have been started on 5mcg butrans patches as 60mg codeine plus 1g paracetamol hasn't been cutting it. Mind you, I've lasted 4 years on codeine before moving up so I don't think that's bad going. Plan.is to increase dose.if I get on ok.with it.

Thanks for all your support, this.forum is.invaluable

I do pilates (well except for when I have a flare up like now!) and I only do the exercises till I feel a slight strain in the muscle then I stop because I know if I carry on I will cross the line and injure myself. You need to learn where your cut off line is in your body. It takes time to find it and it's only you who knows where it is. Once you know you can push yourself up to that point you can exercise or do any physical work causing exhurshion. And you can say that's enough for me. So that's what is important.
