Hello

I have been for my appointment with my consultant this morning at Wigan to see if he would put me on the list for surgery now instead of waiting further...
I got there early, before nine (app was 9.15) and got taken about 9-45 so wasnt too bad...Was on my own as my dad got caught picking niece up from manchester airport at silly o clock so had me frog with me LOL!!!!He looked at my knee again, asked me to try and bend it, asked my age again (43)....Then asked what would I like to do? I said go ahead with TKR....
He explained all the risk complete with infection (1%), nerve damage from scar, blood clots and that may not have as good bend post surgery...He said if got infection and was bad wouldnt have a knee at all and that the best could hope for was 10years.....Also advised to keep losing weight (still trying)! But i wanted to go ahead, get a chance of recovering and be out of pain and walking bit more normally...
So thats me waiting for pre op assessment, I know all the above everyone gets told and get the impression that cos im young they see it as a challenge maybe but can only hope for the best....
Thanks to everyone who posted and was in my pocket, gave me a little lift knowing its there really!!

I think that's what you really wanted, Elaine, so I'm pleased for you. They have to explain the risks. I was told before my knee revision that, if it all went belly up, I could lose the leg. It didn't.

I don't think it's more of a challenge for the surgeon when the patient is young. I had my first two TKRs at 35 and no-one suggested that. The thing about younger patients is that they tend to demand more of their prostheses so they wear out quicker.

Right then, you'd better get exercising

Good for you Elaine...Im so glad it went well and they havent tried to put you of, like you say they have to tell you all the pros and cons., they do sound so scary, they have explained them three times to me, and still they scare me.
But you read the positive post on here of people that have had TKR and there are many.xx

    Hi Elaine
    That is good news.
They have to tell you everything as you no doubt know....even when I had my cataracts done i was warned about being blind afterwards
Wwll girl...get exercising the best you can, and keep to that diet and we'll pray that you hear soon

Very good news and yes they have a duty to tell you about the bad possible outcomes.

I've just been asked to join the hip replacement list and have asked for a week to let it sink in. He filled out all the forms there and then. Then he wants me to go back with the decision. I doubt I'll be able to say no :(

I feel sick!!!!!!! How do you feel?

On the plus side being younger we are a bit healthier, heart, blood pressure wise. I know its not the case for all though.

    Race you.....

    Hi SW

Yeah guess they have to explain all the risks to cover their own backs dont they? Even when he was dictating into his audio machine he said "in spite of me explaining the risks she wishes to go ahead with surgery"...
Suppose youinger people do wear them out quicker, i dont think like that as im not as active as some pensioners but hope to be soonish!!

    Hi Hileena

I guess i dont think about things like that, think about being free of pain and being able to walk more, get back to some kind of normality....Im trying with the exercise, got to get advised by gym and still eating healthy...

That's excellent news Elaine. Sounds like they were almost trying to put you off so I'm glad you stuck to your guns. I don't think these consultants realise just how hard it is to live with Arthur.

Elaine that's great news, no more shall I shan't I, well done for being so positive. That will help you through the op when the time comes.

I'm sure you have read about my TKR, only 14 days ago but really well on the mend now.

I have OA in my left knee and before the new knee fully intended to have that done ASAP. I did have some doubts due to the pain caused by the new knee but those doubts are slowly disappearing while the pains subside.

As you are so young that will also help you get over the op.

Please stay positive and do what you can to lose that bit of weight and exercise the leg as much as you can. The lighter and fitter you are the better.

Take care and keep us in the loop.

It was quite scary what he was saying but i dont have an option do I? I think they tell everyone the same things depending on their circumstances...Either way its a step forward, gotta take a chance!

Elaine, :) I always say it as it is, not hiding anything. Now when I say I am on the mend with less pain that's how it is as well.

I think the worst part is the six weeks recuperation doing as little as possible. I used to think I was bored when I did nothing, now I'm really bored doing even less. :)
