And the moral of the story?.....

I'm suffering with a pretty nasty flare up for me at the moment both legs and hips are pretty swollen and painful. And this morning I woke up with a searing pain in my left hand ring finger so I sat up in bed and looked to see that both my hands had swelled considerably and my left hand ring finger was so swollen you could only see the bottom of my wedding ring! I called my OH and showed him he said we need to get the ring off quickly!! He got some vasaline and tried to get the ring off. Now I need to say so you will understand later my wedding ring is one with diamonds in. We tried to slip the ring off with vasaline but it wasn't moving, next we put my hand in ice cold water and the swelling didn't go down at all by this time I was in agony with the ring cutting into my finger. Now as some of you know my OH is a carpenter so when he appeared with a mini angle and said let's see if I can cut it off for a second I agreed until I heard the noise and I screamed NO WAY!! So defeated he helped me to get dressed and he drove the 2 minute drive (we live literally round the corner from our hospital!) to the Alex Hospital, we where so lucky we got there and the waiting room was empty! So the nurse took us straight through. It took 3 nurses, 2 ring cutters and my OH's assistance to get my wedding ring cut off. Now the moral of this story is.....If you suffer from Arther even if your rings are pretty loose don't wear them, as I have learned it only takes one bad flare up to swell your fingers and your rings stop curculation to your finger! A ring can be replaced your finger can't!!

That sounds like a bit of a trial, well done for returning fingers intact after being dealt with by two ring cutters! I hope that everything settles adn they can resize the ring soon enough...I shall be removing my rings before bed from now on, thank you. Good luck with the flare, hope it settles. A cautionery tale, bubbadog, and I'm very glad it all ended happily. I haven't worn my wedding ring, or any others, for years. I stopped when shaking hands with someone meant excruciating pain. The wedding ring went when my knuckle was getting so damaged it was a case of now or never. I still miss it as I rather like it. I donated my engagement ring when my son & daughter-in-law got engaged so I still see that in use.If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

was a cleaner in a supermarket told me to get my rings off in no uncertain terms. i have lost so much weight that a ring on other hand slipped off in front of her - was started chatting and she said no matter how skinny i wasnt going to loose the swelling on my knuckles anytime soon. just as well she said and i did right there and then as the next day all of my knuckles were totally swollen and out of shape. no rings on since.
dont lose ya fingers gals0 -
I haven't been able to wear my rings for a couple of years now.
It still feels strange, but like you said you can't replace your finger!
I did try wearing them on a chain around my neck, but I didn't like that.
I'm really glad you managed to get your ring removed without damaging your finger.
Hoping your flare soon settles,
all the best,

I am glad they managed to get your ring off, it must have been so painful. Some people put them on a necklace instead. I too have been unable to wear my rings due to swelling for a few years now. I do miss them.0

Gosh it sounds awful this flare up youre having at the moment...If it has been me wouldvce been majorly panicking with ice n vaseline failing.....Aint you greedy too getting three nurses plus OH to get the ring off eventually, LOL!!
Does this mean now once you get the ring welded together you will put them on a necklace now to avoid further happenings...?

So sorry to hear this , Amanda , happened to me about 6 years ago ; all my rings were cut off in A and E too . Hubby bought me another ring for our anniversary a few years later ~ it is always removed at night ! Rings can be removed but the love you share remains . Jillyb0

oMG LOL about the carpenter bit, my OH is a stonemason so lord knows what he'd turn out with in that situation!!
i take mine off every night just in case and if they start feeling tight leave them off til they fit easily again- guess i will get them upsized when the time comes0 -
The joint and flesh swelled round my wedding ring right at the beginning of arthur, 27 years ago. The doctor looked and said that my finger was warm and as it didn't hurt don't worry about it. So I didn't. The swelling has never gone down and I haven't had my ring cut off, it's still there.
People see it and exclaim saying it looks painful and some have advised me to have it removed but I don't.
I stick to what the doctor says as I love my ring and would be really upset not to wear it. I feel it's part of me. I know it's silly.

I couldn't get my wedding ring off if I wanted to. There may come a day when it has to be removed but at the moment its staying put.
It will be a sad day for me when that day comes as its been on my finger for just over 40 years and I'm attached to it.

Thank you for the messages, and I'm glad that it may of made some of you rethink about about wearing your rings. It still makes me feel bare without them on. Sadly my wedding ring can't be repaired as it is diamond encrusted. So I will have to get used to being ringless! Another reason why I hate Arther!0
