Good for you valval, I hope it helps. Distract yourself with the radio or TV as you pedal away and I hope it helps. Don't overdo things though, take it gently to start, yes? Good luck. DD

I confess I never did motivate myself until I finally realised that without the constant, routine exercises, I was going to be stuck in a wheelchair with insufficient arm movement to (those of a delicate disposition please avert your eyes now) wipe my own bottom. Before that, I'd have spells in the physio ward, come out determined to keep it up after seeing the improvement and then, slowly, pack it in again. In other words, fear was my motivation.

As for actually doing the exercises, I always have music on. Ideally, when on my exercise horse, I'd have a screen which showed me ambling gently down a leafy bridle path. Instead, I can only position it where I have to watch myself in a full length mirror looking like a crazy woman.

P.S. As DD says, build up very gently but then keep it up or prepare to build up gently again. Overdoing it is very discouraging.

    Hi Val,

Good luck with the pedalling! My joints are too damaged now to attempt that sort of thing, but I battle through physio every day with the help of my favourite music and tell myself that if I don't exercise I’m not allowed any chocolate – that does the trick! If I had a bike like yours, I'd definitely put it in front of the telly and cycle along to EastEnders etc.

    Hope it goes well!

    Val

I'm  with envy. I don't know how to exercise with arthritis. I'm still at that stage sticky mentioned as her motivation to start I'm afraid.

I just wish you all the best and when it's my turn to start then I'll come ask you. I must confess though I always found exercising infront of the telly good for me.

Enjoy yourself but don't break any bones please.

Good for you Val, it will build the muscles up and protect your knee, I use to have mine in front of the telly, the time went much quicker.
You will find that different muscle hurt because they aren't used the same, maybe your holding on the handle bars more tightly with one arm.
    You keep it up .
    Love

I think you've tackled it very wisely, Val. As it's many, many moons since I was on any sort of bike, I can only assume that maybe, if you're right-handed, you gripped a little hard on that side.

Keep smiling too. It's good for arthritis :D

You have every right to feel proud, Val. You have made a start and a good one. You've also taken steps in advance to stop yourself cheating. I do hope this helps and helps a lot. You deserve it to.

Phew! I'm glad you cleared that one up, fowls. I got stuck for a moment on the 'two fluffy pineapple bums'. My imagination was running riot.
