Hi all,
Iusually manage ok ish at work though cleaning on a industrial scale is hard on my poor neck,as its slowing down at college(where i work) we usually do extras which i dread !
last night we had to do scrubbing with a big machine ive not had to use it up to now because of my neck ,but last night my supervisor insisted i use it ,what could i do she knows my problems with my neck ,i really struggled but did it ,she asked how my neck was once i told her it was painfull but i carried on ,
So what can i do ? im stuck, its a job we do in the holidays i dread it ,do i try and get a note from my doctor or go to HR, ? im in pain now and dreading the rest of the holidays ,thank god ive got two weeks off soon ,can they make you do a job if it makes your condition worse ? i dont know where i stand and i dont want any trouble as im the only one working in my house at the mo , well thats my moan over with ,
thanks ,

hi not sure where but there are posts about this kind of thing i think it prob on working with a . have you got a union if so ask them it silly asking you to do a job that will cause you pain and might stop you being able to work. some one in the know will be along soon take care valval0

This is not good, Heather. I wonder if it was some sort of ‘test’ to see what would happen. You completed the task and your head didn’t drop off so, presumably, she now feels your neck is strong enough. It sounds as if you will now be asked to do it regularly.
I can’t advise on the work front as it’s so long since I was part of it but I hope someone will come along soon who can.If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

thanks,
i think you might be right sticky, when i go in tonight i will let her know how bad it is ,im going to get a letter from my doctor and chiropractor and take them in work and see what is said ,i may have to go to HR but dont want any trouble ,its only one small part of my job so do i just say nothing ?

I really don't know, Heather. I wish I did. My gut feeling is that HR ought to be able to help you but I'm so out of touch with the work scene, please don't take my word for it. Maybe our Helplines would know if you gave them a ring?If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Oh Heather, what a to-do. I cannot help either as I am self-employed but it may be worth your taking the time to have a trawl through the Working Matters Forum, contacting CAB or DIAL (I dunno if they could help but anything is worth a try) but I do think a note from your GP is a starting point. You cannot risk your neck any further. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi Heather
I'm sorry you had a bad night at work. I don't know about your work steps to follow but I know for a fact your supervisor is not suppose to make you do something that affects your health.
In the work forum there is a thread at the top from web manager for employees rights with long term flactuating conditions which I think you may benefit from reading it. They have put a website to visit with different organisations at the bottom so means it's an approved source of information that will help you.
If you are in so much pain and continue doing something that will make your neck worse you will then be unable to work so I think your supervisor is testing you and is out of order.
Wish you fare better today and won't operate the machine again.

Hi all,
well i went to work on wednesday armed with paperwork on arhritis and workers rights to show my supervisor, but as soon as i got there i got upset (was going to be so strong )told them how i felt and to my surprised they listened and agreed that i dont have to use the machine that causes me problems and if i have any problems with anything else im to tell them ,Result!.
so im much happier now ,i think they know what the rights are they were waiting to see what i said ,so i have one less problem to worry about ,

Thanks DD,
it is a relief i dont have to worry about going to work now ,it also means they know now about my condition and hopefully they will be more sympathetic ,

Well done Heather
I'm sure you are so so relieved you've sorted this as your supervisor was bang out of order. You can now go to work and do your job in peace now they are aware you know your rights.
I hope you'll always let them know about anything that makes you hurt so they do reasonable adjustments for you as per law.
All the best
