Oooh that’s a tricky one, Joan. I can only assume that he wants to check so as to be able to rule out cancer.

Now then, there are two procedures that go up the back end. There’s a small camera which just deals with the bottom end part of the colon. It’s called a sigmoidoscopy. My Mum had it once. I was with her, holding her hand, but she was fine and was joking while he was doing it.

The other is a colonoscopy. That goes further up but, because there are no nerve endings in the colon, it doesn’t hurt. I had one. The hardest bit was the fasting and the drinking lots of the stuff you’ve to drink beforehand. It doesn’t taste unpleasant but it is a lot of drinking. If you like, you can watch your colonoscopy on the screen as they do it. (It’s not a very exciting film though  .)

    I hope all goes well.

    Hello Joan
There are quite a few things that can cause the colon to swell, so till you have had the camera they wont know, they told my son that they were checking for cancer it turned out he had IBS.. its inflammation of the bowel and colon..he has had a few camera there and says he much prefers them to down the throat.
I will be in your pocket, but will not look I promise
    you take care xx
    Love
    Barbara

Oh my lovely. :( It's all well and good telling you the piece of paper will say that awful word but not to worry because it isn't. I agree with the others in that they have to check stuff and that it could be any one of a number of things - and also (hopefully) nothing. I'll be there to hold your hand, sing daft songs, flirt with the docs, chat to Sue, in fact I'll do anything you want but I won't bring cashews as they are (apparently) bad for us. Blast. ((((())))) DD

Thanks for the cashew information, Joan. I decided to look them up as I thought nuts were good in moderation.

From what I can gather, cashews aren't strictly speaking nuts but seeds. They contain something that can prevent calcium absorption so I guess they're not a good idea for anyone with osteoporosis. They also go off easily and shouldn't be eaten if they've any black specks on.

Another pleasure gone! Bring on the pistachios!

One reason they are so expensive is that they have to be harvested by hand and the plant from which they dangle is poisonous. I think they are also high in cholesterol-increasing gunge. Why do we enjoy things that are bad for us? As if we don't have enough to cope with . . . . DD

    Hi Joan
The big C is not a word anyone likes to hear. However the tests are done to eliminate the possibility. It doesn't mean you've got it.
I know the thought that you may have will be playing on your mind....don't let it.
You could have any number of things and at least you'll find out whats causing your problems.
Stay as calm and focused as you can I am ready for pocket duties and leave those cashews alone. I can't have them due to osteoporosis and annoyed that others can eat them at will.
    Remember Joan....Positive thoughts. Love May

Hello joan, sorry joining in here belatedly.

I had a colonoscopy a few years ago - and thought you might be encouraged to know that they told me the results immediately afterwards and gave me a printout of their report of what they had seen (thankfully nothing in my case). I heard them doing the same for other people in the recovery ward afterwards so, at least at my hospital, that is obviously standard procedure. So, hopefully the same will be true when you have your test, and you won't have to wait for the results.

    Thinking of you.
