Taken a fall

Hi guys,

How many of you people have had falls due to your problems? I have had a few getting in and out of cars and the odd one when walking over the years.

Last week I was on annual leave and enjoyed the sunshine, relaxing in the garden and all was good. Things got worse though towards the latter part of the week so yesterday, my Mrs decided to take me out to one of the large country parks where we could park the car up and enjoy the sunshine and fresh air. All pretty good until I decided to have a little walk. Very slight embankment, down I toddled before wham, big shooting pain in my hip and knees, they gave way and over I went. I now have a very nice collection of bruises on my knees, elbow, side and a big one just below the hip OUCH!!!. To top it all off, getting up off a deck chair the same thing happened again but this time fell on my bum :o

So today, this 36 year old is moving round with all the agility of " a little old man" according to my co-workers.

Does this happen to others?

I rarely fall and, rightly or wrongly, I tend to assume this is precisely because of my arthritis. With no joints working quite as they should - and that meaning I could never use walking aids - I've always had to concentrate very hard when outdoors on where my feet are going. On uneven ground I subconsciously plan every step, and hang on to others when necessary.

Do you have any walking aids - stick(s), elbow crutch(es), rollator? If you can cope with them I'm sure one or other would make you more secure. Downward slopes are always the worst for me. I usually turn sideways and tackle them like a crab :)
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

I had two falls within a few months of each other, one when a stool collapsed under me and the other when I caught my foot in the hem of my wide-legged jeans. Ouch! Trousers are now worn narrower and my husband bought me a much sturdier stool.

I'm like Sticky, when I'm out and about I concentrate on every step to the point that I walk past friends. I find walking easier now I have my rollator but I still have to focus on the terrain. Walking is no longer a natural activity and slopes are treacherous. I hope the bruises etc fade soon, I find witch-hazel soothing. DD
Have you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben

I used to fall lots to the point I had a song lyric for the occassion: so when you're stumbling and falling, come on and pick yourself up now. I'm hyper mobile as well as having inflammatory arthritis so it's kinda double whammy of bad things combining to make falling quite easy...I did lots of core stability work including hydrotherapy and that made all the difference for me. Now I'm steady on my pins for the first time ever at very nearly 33!

I hope you feel much better soon and everything settles down. Thinking of you. Look after yourself and rest up til then.

    Big hugs LV xx

    Thanks guys,

No walking aids at the moment. I would not say I am unseady on my feet either. I just walk a bit stiff and in pain. However, occasionally my hips or kness will give way and that is when I ten to end up face down or on my back side. luckily this is not a regular occurance but twice in one day was a change to the norm I guess
