Stump Playing up

Morning Everyone :D

Yep I know it’s my own fault, I have over worked the stump. Last night as my OH removed the leg there was blood and a bit of puss. :?

For a good few months, from the end of December to be exact the stump has been great. :D
I never walk on it only for the few odd steps and to transfer from wheelchair to another chair etc.

Well……on Thursday night when I went for my eyes testing I got out of my chair at the door of 3 different eye testing rooms and hobbled in trying not to put too much pressure on leg.

I know….I should have stayed in the chair

Then on Friday…..I hobbled into a building society, this only took a maximum of 20 steps to the counter from the door where I had left my scooter.
(this building society is only a small place so the scoot won’t fit in.)

Then I think it was Saturday…..feeling as though I wanted to try more steps (just for exercise purposes) I asked OH to get my walker back out of the garage so that I could do a few steps in the living room. I walked from the dining room end to the bottom of the stairs and was quite pleased as I walked quite tall. :D I only did this once as I wanted to do a little each day.

Yesterday as my OH put my leg on (after 3 attempts cause I kept pulling stump away) I knew that it wasn’t quite right but when it was on it felt okay.

Well….today I am legless so it serves me right :(
Although I do look elegant going round on my chair with the stump crossed over my good leg  , I say good leg….its as bent as a dogs hind leg but it holds me up

Anyway what I am trying to say I have learnt my lesson, My leg is for cosmetic purposes only.

I have had the leg nearly 8 yrs but it has been the last 3 yrs that it has played up and the surgeon who did another small op the other year did say I shouldn’t walk on it.
Ah well…..thank you for reading :)
Have a good day and take care of yourselves

Love Juliepf x

    Poor you, what rotten luck.
I hope it settles soon, and you haven't done too much damage.
Take it easy, thinking of you,

Oh Julie! Poor Stumpy! I guess you just pushed him a bit too much.

I know it's not in your nature to do the drama queen thing but I'm a tad concerned that you're underplaying this.

Please don't take any chances, my dear friend. If in doubt, ring the doc. Antibios might be needed and, if they are, the sooner the better in my book.

    I'm thinking of you. ((()))

Hi Julie, yes we are our own worse enemies! We push ourselves to far sometimes!! And then we wonder why we are suffering! My OH is always saying to me ' you go and over do it and then you wonder why you get poorly!' He tells me off for over doing it. I think we all do it!

((( Julie ))) I agree with Sticky, do you think you should get some antibiotics? I would hate for you to suffer further.

    Rest up.

Dear, dear Julie, I am so sorry to hear what has happened. I know you know that you should not have done what you did but even with the surgeons words ringing in your ears, it must be so difficult to just every so often wish to see if you can do it and even perhaps try to prove him wrong. I can well understand why you wish to stand and walk a few steps every now and again. You manage exceedingly well and I find you a real inspiration. It must have been such a temptation to think "oh I will just do those steps, that will be ok and it is such a great feeling to stand tall for a few moments".

I sincerely hope that it clears up in a short while for you. You have quite enough on your plate at the moment.

I shall be in touch, with slightly better news than the last message to you.:)

Gentle hugs, love and a smile :) being sent over,

    Elna x

Well that's a s@d isn't it! Poor you when you just trying to walk some steps. I am assuming that with the air getting to your stump it will heal quite quickly, fingers crossed. Always positive, you are Julie, whatever your troubles but please seek help if it doesn't clear up quickly.

    Luv,

Thank you all for your kind replies and advice which I am taking on board :)

We will check it tonight before bed and hopefully todays rest will have helped it.

If the stump is no better, I will Ring the gp and see if someone will come out to have a look and prescribe some ab's if needed.

Barbara, I think you could be partly right too  .
This hot weather is uncomfortable for the leg.

Oh poor you, Julie! Please do see the doctor, it doesn't sound good. If you don't mind me asking, was it an amputation? My grandma had a below the knee amputation due to a tumour and she was told to be very careful with regards to infections. Could it possibly be the prosethesis rubbing or do you often get sore?

Sending much love. You must look after yourself, rest and please don't beat yourself up with regards to overdoing it. That's an order! ;) xx

    good morning everybody :D

Last night on inspecting the stump it had calmed down and there had been no more blood or puss.

This morning we checked it again and at the moment it is still behaving and isn't as red. Richard put the inner sleeve on and there was no pain. :)
He took the sleeve off again and for the next couple of days I am having complete rest and I am hoping this will do the trick, but rest assured I will get the doctor if needed.

STARBURST.. my amputation is also a below the knee one, and the problems started over three years ago when they give me my third leg and it didn't fit properly. It was too big and yes it kept rubbing. I kept telling them it was too big but what they kept doing was sticking bits to the outside of the liner and making me wear more socks.
Eventually about two and a half years ago after suffering a for a year they decided to give me a much better make of leg. The measurements for my leg were done on a computer so that was more accurate than the plaster of paris impressions that the used to take. The leg is a much better fit now but the problems I now have is that what was the shin bone doesn't have much skin around it so too much pressure will again start of the problem. :? I will go back to prosthetics when I have had my neck operation, at the moment I deal with too many appointments :)

    Hi Tony
hope you are ok too my friend

Thank you for reading and thinking of me (I am going back to bed as I am having nausea and bad heads which are related to the neck. You will never see these words again ....I CAN'T WaIT TO SEE SURGEON and get this op done  I am now going to take things very easy until I see him as the headaches are not nice (and this I promise because alot of you know me and it is hard to stop me rushing around on the scooter or chair )

    Take care

 :o  Who are you and where is our lovely pink flamingo? bring her back instantly :!:

Julie, for all your brave words, things are not too good when you start talking like this. I'm very pleased that Stumpy seems to have gone back to sleep but persistent nausea is horrible and debilitating. I'm sorry, I can't remember if you've been given any meds to counteract it  If not, might it be worth a try?
