Hi all,
Just a quick question, I suffer terribly with mouth ulcers, as I write this I have 7 all over my lips and tongue and can nearly eat. My rheumy said it was likely to be from the 10mg methotrexate so has upped my folic acid to 4times a week. He did this 3 weeks ago but still no relief yet.
Has anyone else had this? If so how long did it take to have an effect?

X

Oh you poor thing, I really feel for you. :( It can take a while for the folic acid to help. I actually take it 6 days a week and it has helped with my ulcers.

If you're really struggling, it might be worth seeing your GP. Mine prescribed me prednisolone meltlets which melt on the ulcers and quite frankly are a g-d send.

    All the best. x

Hi, I and a friend had a similar experience with methotrexate and the folic acid does work. If I didn't take it for three days after pill day I would get a cold sore right under my nose....hope it works soon! Nx

Hello penJ, I also get a lot of ulcers due to being immune depressant.
As Starburst said the prednisolone meltlets are great, both my gp and dentist give them to me.
I also use Difflam mouthwash. The maxillofacial unit told me it's the best when you have ulcers and mouth sores. I used to get it on prescription, then our gp tightened up on things and I had to pay £15 a bottle for it but since they've been marketing it for sore throats you can get it in Asda for under a fiver.
I've been putting up with the blighters, together with the roof of my mouth coming down in strings, for over 30 years, on and off. It's definitely worse when I'm down and in a flare up. Usually they clear up in about a week or so, with the treatment.
I've also had loads of bottles of Zovirax (liquid form) when they are really bad and that also works well.
Hope you feel better soon and find an answer that suits you., Joy

Thanks for the tips, hadn't thought about the immunosuppressed element. Will head off to get the melt thingys from the doc and get more folic acid if I'm still struggling.
Thanks for all your support as always
