Book about TKRs looks really good!

I may be jumping the gun here as I haven't read this book, only ordered it but....
I'd been thinking that there must be loads more info around on rehabilitation after a TKR than we get given. Everyone says that exercise etc is so important, but what do most of us get - a very few physio sessions, then signed off: a visit to the consultant at 6-8 weeks, then that's it. I didn't think it was enough...
So I went on Amazon, and found a book called "TOTAL KNEE REPLACEMENT AND REHABILITATION: The Knee Owner's Manual". It had nine 5 star reviews, and sounded really good. I looked at the contents page, and it was amazingly thorough; I found myself wishing I'd bought it a few months ago, but it talks about exercises right up to the end of the first year, and different types for balance, strengthening etc, so I still need it.
Anyway, I bought it, and when it arrives I'll let you know if it's as good as it sounds. It's American, but that doesn't matter that much, according to the reviewers. And it's over £14, but what's that when it comes to health, and it's cheaper than gym membership.
I suppose I should have waited before telling you all, but it sounded so good that I wanted to share it.

Helen thanks for the heads up - I just ordered a copy.
I was thinking about the other two books they have but can't afford the £150.
Don't think I'm ready to do my next TKR myself anyway0 -
A word of caution for all rheumatoid patients.
The Table of Contents doesn't seem to distinguish between those who have an auto-immune form of arthritis and those who have only OA. My surgeon has always instructed my physios that I have R.A. and should not try some of the exercises. If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

I know what you mean Steve; you have to stop somewhere. I just ordered a mini exercise bike from Amazon a week ago too, so that's nearly £50 altogether with this book. Still, my DLA will pay for it. And if my knees get good enough for me to go back to market research interviewing, my long term casual fill-in job for many years, that's less than one day's pay. All day on my feet is a long way away still though, I suspect.
stickywicket, good point!0 -
oh go on then just nearly bought 50 shades of grey in w h smiths waiting for my 8/30 appointment ............brand new hospital ........ yes anything that helps my bend .....well done said consultant .... wound nice .. ok just a little more effort with the bend grrrrrrr ... he does appreciate I am scared because of the rhuematoid arthritis to push and pull to much maybe the books will help and please guys dont forget the meet up its something to strive for Marrianne.0
-
Marrianne, I won't forget, but we have to decide on a place to meet. I thought we'd firm up details early next year; any earlier than that and people will forget, but some may need time to get things organised so not much later. Maybe early September after schools etc go back? Or is holiday time easier?0

My book arrived today and I looked briefly through the first section, then skim-read the whole second section - from about four weeks post-surgery onwards. It's brilliant. I just wish I'd thought to research and buy it long ago, before I had my op, preferably. Written by a surgeon who specialises in this sort of surgery, and a physio who's had a bilateral TKR himself, it answered just about all the questions I'd tried to get answered, or had trouble finding out about. Eg, kneeling is OK but many people can't do it, sunbathing with a scar won't do it any harm but it'll look better if you use sunblock, you need to massage around the scar, a lot of the weakness is caused by the fact the quadriceps have been cut during the op, etc etc etc. It also has loads of exercises for right up to a year after the TKR...though to be honest if you did absolutely everything he recommends you'd have to give up eating, sleeping, and all normal life. But seriously, everyone who's contemplating a TKR, on the waiting list for one, or had one recently should get this book. And no, they're not paying me commission for recommending it! :!:0

I'm almost at the end of this book, think its very good apart from disagreeing with my consultant who told me to ignore the pain. Book says listen to the body and there is no good coming from the pain
The exercises look good, especially for the pool and I will be trying them this afternoon.
I may even buy one of those balls to use at home.0 -
I agree about listening to your body. However, in the early stages you have to ignore pain and keep exercising regardless of how you feel. Trick is to know the difference. I think the book says something like that, doesn't it? Anyway, I constantly overdo things, so I'm hardly an expert.
I was thinking of buying a multigym, but I can't find one that wouldn't take up a whole room! I'm sure the one shown in the book looks a sensible size, but I can't find it so far on any website. Oh well, I can probably work out suitable exercise alternatives using what I have at home.0 -
I ordered the book last night , should come on Fri x0

Just been reading in the book about Thera-bands - huge elastic bands that you use for resistance exercises. That'd be cheaper than a multi-gym. You can buy them on Ebay, but has anyone tried them. Steve?0
-
Hi Helen
Yes,I have got some bands..........I had them after my arthroscopies (I've had 3 on the same knee.........the one I've just had replaced!)
They are good and certainly do help with resistance and the stretching of the ham strings! :-)0 -
I have recently thrown one away thinking I will never use it again
It was given to me at a rehab centre when first diagnosed with OA. I did some resistance exercises with it but, as with all things it just went in the wardrobe never to be used again
Recently I was give some tubigrip by a Physio to use trying to get my TKR leg to do a straight leg raise. That had some elasticity and could be used for similar purpose.0
