Hi everyone..I hope this lovely weather is helping your bones.
My story for those that dont know, OA in both hips one knee, back, neck and a couple of other places.
I should have had my first THR at least 3 years ago,I actually went on the list, but was scared of the op, but also by something that another consultant said, the pain could be from your back.
I have had injection in my back, and also in both hips, none of these have worked.
What I need to know from you hip people is what are your symptoms, at the min I am using a wheelchair when I go out, has after around 5mins of walking the pain is so severe that none of my meds touch it.
I am quite good with pain, but this is something I cant control.
Does anyone get pain down there thigh, into the shin, and at the very bottom of the back, even my tailbone is painful when sitting. xrays show my hips are in a bad way, but still my consultants says they may not be causing the pain, so before I go ahead I need to know what other symptoms you hip people have .
Sorry Iv gone on a bit..
Love
Barbara

    Hi Barbera

Not sure if i can help, i have OA in my lumber spine, the pain on standing is very painful, it goes to my hips knees and thighs sometimes.

Also sitting for any length of time especially on a hard chair is very painful in the tailbone and hurts more on standing.

I also cant walk very far without severe pain and numb feelings sometimes in my hips and bum.

Some of your symptoms seem similar.

Barbara, I hope this link is allowed.

    http://www.healthcentral.com/chronic-pain/c/17554/24814/sacroiliitis

In it it mentions that back pain can cause hip and thigh pain. I have back and hip pain and often don't know what causes what. However your situation has gone on for so long. It is such a shame that they can't work out what is going on.

Maybe you need to demand action from your gp? Do I remember correctly that you had an mri? Maybe you need to be firm about the THR as if your hips are affected then you need the op anyway.

Just thoughts as I feel you have put up with the pain for so long, that you deserve some relief.

    ((( hugs )))

    Hi Barbara,

I am a back person, not a hip person, but I get pain from my lumbar spine that goes into my thighs, shin and feet as well as into the hip, bum and groin sometimes. I think it is hard to pick out what is causing the pain. I hope they can work out where yours is coming from soon.

Thanks so much for your reply's I really will have to get something done very soon.
Gilly thanks that is very helpful, I am making a list here...should I go for a THR or not
Thanks Suzy,I think if I insist they would do my hip, but I really am scared of being worse off if that is possible
Helen thanks for the link, that is one I haven't seen and I have done loads of googling

This is a tough one, Barbara, and I know you've lived with it for all too long.

For what it's worth, I don't have back problems apart from a bit at the bottom. I can't remember ever having the thigh or shin pain.

Before the THRs I got classic hip pain in my groin and sort of just above the top/centre of the affected buttock. I did also, when it got really bad, have to sit on cushions because of pain round the tailbone area.

It's a real shame that none of the injections worked. If at least one had done you might have a better idea.

I think, in your situation I'd just go for the op and hope. You won't be any worse off even if you're no better.
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

My pain started in my lower back & sometimes in my thigh & tailbone, but mostly my back. My problem is mostly my hips - Ive now had THR right side & the difference is amazing. Im still recovering, my tailbone is still very painful & some pain in my other hip. But compared to before my of 7 weeks ago Im like a new person, before the operation I could barely walk & life had come to a halt. I was on so much medication fentynl patches 50g &12g together , cocodymol & naproxen , which Im slowly reducing now, before they hardly touched my pain.
Ive still got problems & a long way to go, but so encoraged.
I was terrified having it done, but I was so well cared for & it was actually easy compared to what I had been putting up with.
So dont be afraid - go for it.

    Thanks so much everyone
SW...you are thinking on the same lines has me, I have to go for it and see what happens, it was the consultant saying I wouldn't feel the benefit....I think this is stalling to be honest.
lazicat...Im so glad you have posted this, it is such a big help to know others have been there and feeling the benefit...I am so glad you are improving by the day..and I do wish you well with it all
    Thanks again xx
