Just a routine appointment in orthopaedics.
I’ll pass over Mr SW inadvertently taking my knickers down as he pulled my jeans off in the changing cubicle. That wasn’t a big problem as, fortunately, I’d insisted on closing the curtain completely rather than the ¾ that he deemed sufficient.
On to X-ray. The radiographer said “It’s the right one that’s a replacement knee, isn’t it, so I’ll do that one first.”
“Not exactly” I replied. “They’re both replacements but the left one is a revision.”
She checked the notes. “Oh, it says here….Never mind. I’d better do the revision first then. So, is it very long? Will we be able to fit it on?”
“Yes” I said. “And probably not first go as no-one ever does.”
She did. It was the other that caused the problems.
Back in orthopaedics, my usual man was away. Through the wide open door I saw his stand-in poring over my X-rays – knees to hips to knees again to hips again. Front. Side. Front. Side. It was when he held his head in his hands that I felt he might be a bit out of his depth.
He was good, though. Kind. Gentle. Waggled my knee and tried to waggle my ankle. Took my shoe and sock off. Bent the knee and tried to bend the ankle. Then the classic “I’m just going to check your X-rays again.” This is code for “I’m just going to call in the cavalry.” He was gone some time.
By the time he got back he’d decided the reason my ankle is now attempting to turn itself back to front is probably more due to hip than knee. Apparently, it usually is when that happens. (The ankle itself doesn’t move but still gets further outwards. Don’t ask me. I’m merely the owner.) The hip, he said, looks like it might be just pulling away from the cup. How long had I had the hip? Only about 8 years. How long had I had the knee? 31 years. He breathed in deeply, checked it out again, slowly replaced my sock (Inside out. Typical bloke) and decided to pass the buck.
I’m to come back in another 6 months (When he’ll be long gone?) but, if I’ve any problems in the interim, I must come back sooner. Whether knee or hip, they’d rather do a revision before the real problems begin. Question is – which??

If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Hmmmmm. Dr DD prescribes cider in the garden. I don't know what to say, Sticky, I suspect you know more about these matters than many, does what he said make sense to you? Do you feel as though the hip is de-cupping? (Can one feel it?) I dunno girl, I really don't. Just be sensible, if something feels wrong or at odds please see someone about it sooner rather than later. DD
PS Culpa's are good, a mea culpa may be better.Have you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0 -
Sounds like all the fun of the fair- two men, no luck with their ability to manage undergarments properly and a diagnosis of 'errrr I'll think I'll pass the book'! That has to be some kind of record for confusing and a bit pointless medical appointments. I think next time you should ask Dr DD, her treatment sounds far more fun! Hope you are resting and not too sore. Hugs n love LV xxHey little fighter, things will get brighter0

Oh dear, Sticky, what a to do. I'm sorry you didn't get any concrete answers, always frustrating. Hope you're having a good ole rest after that ordeal. I always find appointments tiring. Take good care of your lovely self. xx0

I hope you did as she suggested though annd had a nice glass of cider in your garden.

Thank you everyone. I wasn't tired after it but I did come home with a stinking headache which has only just started to lift.
It wasn't a cider-in-the-garden sort of day (Though, DD, you may write my prescriptions any time you wish ) so I settled for multiple culpas and, when they and paracetamol failed to work I headed for the Tempranillo. That didn't work either but I did nod off for a while which helped.
I have no idea a hip de-cupping feels like (It sounds more like a bra problem) and my hip feels pretty OK. I shall ignore it all but I shall be sensible if I can't.If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Ummm, why would you be wearing a bra on your hip? I know my boobs sag but even so . . . . . . .
Wouldn't one feel if one's hip was not properly in its place? Couldn't that be sensed? I'm off to try. I hope the headache has cleared and I am pleased to read that you will be sensible - don't try to ignore things too hard though. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. It's a personal thing, DD. I don't like to talk about it
I gave up thinking I ought to know when & where I had a problem joint when my left TKR slid across my knee and hurt not a bit. The ankle was a **** though! If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

It did what? Strewth. Crikey, I can't even slide one knee across the other. No wonder your ankle hurt - I take it it was the left ankle that was the ****? DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0
