There was me, enjoying a sunny, quiet Friday and looking forward to the week-end when the postman hurled some stuff through the letter box including a letter in a brown envelope.

It's orthopaedics for you, young Daisy, to see a bloke or a member of the team. October 23, 9.30am. Gulp. I guess this is to do with the carpal tunnel stuff (which has been behaving itself and I'd kinda forgotten about  ) the referral that my rheumatologist said she couldn't make and I would have to see the GP for her to do it. I haven't but yet I have a letter. It can ony be the tunnel stuff - I still have two years and 1.5 stone to go before the knees.

I know from what the rheumatologist said it's going to need surgery before things get worse. I'm assuming it won't be anything too difficult (bearing in mind I won't be doing it  ) both hands are bad, the right is the worst but the odd thing is is that it's been behaving itself. Typical. DD

If it is or yourr carpel tunnel, its only a day case but they tend to do it whille your awake and both hands together, unless you tell them otherwise
There is an injection you cann have for carpel tunnel bt cant remeber the name.
    Hope all goes well

Awake? AWAKE? I don't do awake for anything let alone day surgery. Thanks for the info, kazt84, I will wait and see what they have to say but yes, I'd prefer to have both done at the same time to save mucking about and before things get too bad.

Ah mig, the dentist. What's one o' they? Why doesn't arthritis behave like toothache, i.e. make an appointment and it vanishes. DD

You are unable to drive for a couple of weeks after, so would be better to get both done together. You are just given a local anesthetic unfortunately

Have to see what they say :D

Earphones blaring music and eyes shut? Even if you're awake you don't have to be present in the mind! Arthritis likes to make us look like we're making it up...it knows the appointment is coming and hides til the day after the appointment. I'm ready for pocket duties if required. Love LV xx

    Hi DD

I dont know much about carpal tunnel......but good luck with it. It does sound as if it would be better to get both over and done with at once.

    Hi DD

I'm 3 carpal tunnels down so far! One on left and had second on right a year ago. It was first done in 2003 but came back!

Last time the consultant was showing the anatomy to a student nurse and I piped up with "I wouldn't mind a look too" so he lifted up my arm and let me have a good nose at my wrist hanging open! Sorry to those for who this is TMI!

    It was fascinating.

It is just local anaesthetic but quick and oh, so improving instantly of symptoms. Do not fear! It is bliss after and by the way I was allowed to drive at 10 days and was fine.

A year on..... no regrets. :D

Good luck anyway with it all.

You are a woman after MR SW's own heart. Our previous dentist used to complain that he wouldn't even open his mouth until he'd had an injection.

I very much hope it all goes swimmingly when done. I'm sure Numpty will give you some tips. It's annoying when we keep having to have bits tinkered with but you will handle it with aplomb, I'm sure.

No driving? NO DRIVING? What's that all about? I routinely steer with me knees whilst texting, it's no big deal.

Thank you all for your lovely replies, I must admit to feeling quite discombobulated by this unexpected letter. I texted 'im indoors about it and he arrived home 30 minutes early which was also unexpected but much, much more welcome. 'Tis only a small thing, compared to some of the other stuff that is going on this is nowt - the words back, camel and straw are stupidly springing to mind. I must go to bed. DD

Right, I've muddled through what passes for my mind as to why this letter has appeared. My rheumatologist must have written to the GP who then swung into action and this is the result. Oddly enough my hands are tingling beautifully this morning so that's a reminder that it hasn't gone away. On the other hand other stuff is much better which must be due to the diclo. I'll take some more today - I like meds that do what it says on the packet. DD

I think you're right. Rheumatologist>GP>orthopaedics>DD. It's so simple when it all works smoothly but it does tend to take us by surprise.

Shame about the hands. Good about the other stuff. Meds that do what they're supposed to - ah yes, if only they'd stop there.

Hey DD. Im expecting at least four brown envelopes for four different things to arrive in the near future. Will amuse myself guessing which one it is for before i open it. Such fun :!: I had carpel tunnel during my last pregnancy. The baby came and it went, never to return, but i remember it being painful so hopefully you will get some relief after you get it fiddled with.

    Hi DD
I will be in your pocket on the 23rd but I will have to take a blindfold and earplugs if you are having surgery awake!!
I had a spinal and GA for my THR!! Not taking any chances me!
I think your reminder of the tingling today was well timed and telling you it is time to bet the wrists sorted. Good luck x

NB, I suspect that this will be a discussion about the possibility of surgery: the NHS is a very good thing but it's not renowned for its efficiency. If others have had 'concious' surgery then so can I. Gulp. :? I am sure all will be well, surgery is meant to help and I am sure it will whenever I get it. Mind you, I'm content to wait. DD
