Well here I go folks :!:
Tomorrow I'm starting on a 12-week healthy lifestyle progamme which aims to increase my physical activity levels and to improve my nutrition choices. I have been referred onto the programme by my GP as it's designed for people with health conditions such as joint or mobility problems. It's also aimed at people who want to lose weight, as I do.
So far I've had a one-to one consultation with a very nice lady at my local leisure centre, and she has designed an exercise programme specially tailored for me. Tomorrow she is going to take me through all the exercises, so I'm hoping I will be able to do them.
The other part of the programme is aptly named ''Waist-wise'' and that begins on the 17th.
I'm well motivated to do the programme, so hopefully I will be a slimmer, fitter woman at the end of it.......Watch this space :!:

I'm sure you will Joan as you sound very motivated and determined. Please keep us updated. If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Well done Joan
It sounds a good programme and I hope you have good results and are pleased with yourself at the end of the 12 weeks.
Love Juliepf x0 -
Good luck, Joan. I wish you lots of luck and success and look forward to hearing all about it.

Thank you for your good wishes, Susiesoo, Julie,Val,DD, and SW.
I'm back from my first session and still in one piece :!:
I was taken round all the exercise machines which are suitable for me and shown how to use them. Altogether, I was exercising for about an hour with the instructor watching me the whole time. She was very good, and careful that I didn't put too much stress on my knees and ankle where I have arthritis. However, she explained how the exercise would help to strengthen my muscles, which should be beneficial.
There are other classes which she recommends, eg. aqua-aerobics and something called 'body harmony'. I think I will give them a go as I would very much like more harmony in my body
Each session only costs £2 while I'm on the 12-week referral scheme, so it's pretty good. The consultation and the ''Waist-wise'' part of it are free.0 -
Joan, good for you!!! I hope it works. I am starting on a course at the beginning of October. It is designed to similar and enrols you in Weight Watchers for free as well as exercise classes although they may be beyond me
I wanted to start sooner but have to get over back injections. Just hopeI don't chicken out in the meantime.
I hope your course helps you, we shall have to compare notes0 -
Thanks Suzy, I think similar schemes are available in most parts of the country. Did you get referred by your doctor like me?
I will let you know how I get on, but I've made a promising start today.0 -
No, I stumbled across a stall whilst out and apparently they had been running for 3 years  I had no idea. When I mentioned it to a couple of friends they are trying it as well. It seems a really good idea they give you one to one sessions for a year!! I thought I may as well give it a try, maybe I will be able to lose some weight now I am off the steroids.
It is hard when you have limited mobility. I would be interested to know if you got ok with the exercises. I may not manage that part.
I really wish you every success with it.0 -
Sounds a splendid scheme. I'm going to check if my local leisure centre has such a thing. It would be great to be able to lose some weight before (dare I say the word) Christmas is upon us.
I'm sure you will do well and feel much better for it. Though you may have to buy yourself a completely new wardrobe or get the sewing machine out and take in those seams.

The programme I'm on can only be accessed through referral from a doctor or nurse, and is designed for people with health conditions such as arthritis and being overweight. I'm sure that similar schemes exist throughout the country though. (I'm in Derbyshire)
It will be a good reason to buy lots of new clothes if I manage to lose weight0 -
I'm glad it went well, Joan. Good for you. No payback? If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.
Steven Wright0 -
No payback at all :!: I'm amazed as I'm not stiff this morning like I usually am. I feel so much better for the exercise, plus the dog-walking which I'm now doing, so I will definitely keep it up.0

That is great news Joan.0

I went to the gym again today, and I really enjoyed it. An added bonus was when I went on the rowing machine. A young man was rowing on the machine next to mine, and I kept up the same pace as him for ten minutes. He had his machine set at a higher level than mine, but we rowed together in unison.
Just put me down for the Olympics in four year's time
I'm finding that my energy levels are better already, and so far I haven't had any pay-back regards pain.0 -
joan this is great so glad it is going well keep up the good work valval0
-
Well done you Joan
Use it or loose it I say.
Been for a swim this morning and Tuesday too and a walk on the treadmill yesterday.
I DO feel better for it - not least probably because l drink WATER when I am exercising
Hope you get NO payback at all.
Love

Thanks Val and Toni
Yes, I agree about the water, Toni, and take a bottle with me to the gym.
I'm very surprised that I haven't had any payback at all as I thought I would be very stiff and sore afterwards. I have soaked in the bath straight away though, so I'm sure that has helped.
I have been sleeping better too since exercising, so that's another bonus.0 -
you are doing great well done valval0

That's very impressive, Joan. Keep goingIf at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

The healthy eating part of the programme begins on Monday, so no doubt I will have to be weighed  ( The moment of truth :!: )
I was encouraged at the gym by the fact that there were several ladies much fatter than me on the exercise machines though. I felt quite slim in comparison, although I need to lose about 2 stone :roll:0 -
the weight will come off with the exercise eating well just a bounus you will be so healthyval0

Great to hear this Joan, you go for it.
Around here our council Kirklees runs a Pals class, this class is for recovering hospital patients, but the general public can join in.
I was referred by the hospital after my heart problems, starting with Tai Chi
and now I play badminton, table tennis and aerobics, I also have taken up
archery, now going to the gym 6 days a week.
I went to a seminar about eating for my heart, and decided to go for it, dropping 2 stone has been a big bonus.
I found a blood diet on the net, and I now eat for my blood group, and feel ten times better.
Obviously it might not suit everybody, but it certainly made sense to me.
Blood Type Diet
Arfa0 -
Well done Arfa :!: You are certainly very active and doing everything you can to keep yourself fit and well. Dropping two stone is a real achievement too. I haven't heard of the Blood Type Diet before, but it's interesting. Thanks for posting the link.
I've been to my first WaistWise meeting tonight (run by Derbyshire health services) and was very impressed. There was some interesting discussion about food, and I've got to keep a food diary for a week. I was weighed and measured, but in private, so that was a good thing. There was only one man at the meeting- why should that be :?: Are men too embarrassed to join a weight-loss group :?:
Off to the gym and aqua-aerobics tomorrow! I'm really feeling motivated to want to get fit and lose weight now.0
