Arachnids (don't read if you are of a nervous disposition)

Sorry not to have been around for a couple of weeks due to computer problems. Had to buy a new one in the end which was a shock to the bank balance. So far this year we have had to replace the tv, the cooker and now the computer. We don't want any more nasty surprises before Christmas.

Anyway - it's that tine of the year again when arachnids (spiders to you) lurk in every crevice and corner of your house. They've got their beady eyes on you and are just waiting to scurry across your feet or drop down from the ceiling on to your head. They even hide under the duvet ready to scamper up your pyjamas.
Jam jars at the ready for the brave or a cricket bat for the scared.

I can't stand 'em. I'm on the alert now as the webs are appearing everywhere in the garden and the temperatures are dropping. I know they can't hurt me, I know they are useful creatures but . . . . . . I loathe 'em. Simples. DD

PS It's nice to see your name again and I hope your new computer lasts the distance.

Yep, this is the time of year when they look for warmth and find ecen the tiniest gap to get indoors.

If you don't want them inside, get some horse chestnuts or conkers and place them around your window sills or about the house and they'll stop from coming inside. They emit an odour that spiders cant stand yet, we cant smell a thing from them.

    the poor things
It's cold outside and they just wanna get warm and snuggly lol.
I like em but Janet hates them. I always put them carefully outside. The conker thing has made a difference here. There are a lot less coming in now.

    Ah poor little spiders :!:

Please don't kill them. Spiders are extremely important to agriculture and horticulture. They are predators and their main prey are insects, many of which eat our crops and pester our livestock. In Britain alone, it has been estimated that spiders eat more than the weight of the human population in insects each year! As natural pest controllers they are second to none.
Just put a glass over them, then slide a card underneath and hold it tight so the spider can't escape. Then take it outside and let it go. Simples :!: :D

Looks like we will be conkering this weekend and must admit I have heard this tip before. Hope it works.

Last week I saw a medium sized bright green spider by our bins which I hadn't come across before  . We've got loads of brown spotty spiders which love to make their webs right across my kitchen window. Not a very attractive sight first thing in the morning.

Just been for a walk along Maldon Prom - lovely. :)

Mr LV just leapt up (a rare event) and told me to pick my feet up. I knew he wouldn't do that for a little incy wincy spider and sure enough it was about three foot long (each leg) and hairy. He kindly showed it the door. I need more conkers after my delinquent youngest dog went around and ate all of last years supply...either that or I need the cat to decide to spend more time indoors. Ewwwww, the hairs on my neck are still all up ewwwwwwww.
Hey little fighter, things will get brighter

A cricket bat  You can't treat a cricket bat like that, Janet  Use a brush or a mop or a hockey stick even but, please, not a cricket bat

well apparently a certain product from a well known door to door cosmetic co is effective at warding them off........

its call Skin so Soft and its a body spray.......... :-)

either that or conkers in the corners of rooms are also supposed to help, and there are various preparations and plug in devices available at garden centres etc to keep the buggers out

I cant bear the things are am regularly found to be putting glasses over them and leaving them for OH to dispose of!

Despite having been bitten by a common orb weaver spider many years ago (it was not pleasant I can tell you) I don’t worry too much about them they’re not interested in us the simply see the home as a big old cave so I simply evict them by using a glass and a piece of card, and anyway they keep other bugs down in your house so before you kill an innocent critter remember the old rhyme that goes, “if you want to live and thrive let the spider run alive”, after all their natures pest controllers who are only doing good deeds they mean no harm. After all bees can sting you and you don't kill them do you?, the poor old spider simply lost out in the good looks department that's all.

I have 7 cats...they eat any spiders that manage to get into the house. I often find the odd mangled leg on a stair or the kitchen floor. Plus it is great entertainment watching them trying to catch the things...they bounce up and down at walls and throw themselves off the top of doors.

Downside to having 7 cats...they try and trip me up and kill me several times a day.

I had a very nasty experience with a spider last night. I pulled back the quilt to get into bed and there was a huge spider right in my bed

It ran for its life, but I managed to catch it under a glass and put it out of the window. Phew :!: :!: But now I'm wondering how long it had been sharing my bed with me

No No NO, I have my conker spray with me at all times, I spray round the shower base where there are little gaps, I also have what looks like a badminton racket, which is battery powered, so it zaps anything that you get, had four mosquito's last night, zapped. I know spiders are important, but I would rather they be important outside and not in my room. OH picks them up, while I go into a meltdown. Jump, oh Good Lord, if I see one jump I will keep over. I have the three cats in my room, they alert me of anything lurking so I can reach for sprays and electric zapper. The "spider away" spray seems to help.
