Scan finding!

Went and had ultrasound scans yesterday at the hospital, on my letter it said left hand/wrist,Right hand/wrist, left ankle/foot & Right ankle/foot. So I went into the room sat down and the Radiographer expland what he was going to do and what the Rhummey wanted to scan for. So he started with the right hand (my most painful) and put warm! yes that's right warm jelly not the usual cold jelly on my wrist and started scanning, he scanned over hand and wrist and all fingers, took several stills. and said he was finished and gave me tissue to clean the jelly off and he started on the left hand, warm Jelly and scanned the hand wrist and fingers again took several stills. And when he finnished he gave me more tissue. And said 'right we're done'. I said my appt says for both Feet and ankles as well, I showed him the letter and he said my request says both hands & wrists no feet. So I asked him about the scans and he said he found signs of Osteo-Arthritis in my right thumb joint and left small finger other than that the rest of both hands and wrists are clear. But that doesn't mean to say you don't have arthritis in those area's some doesn't show in scans. So I feel I had a wasted appt as I know I have Arthritis in those joints!

Sometimes I think we all tend to invest our appointments with too many hopes and expectations, especially when X-rays or scans are involved. I speak as one who was probably guilty of that last week. X-rays, scans etc measure specific things, none of which include pain. They are not a Holy Grail. They are useful tools but no more.
A few months ago I had a CT scan on my neck as I have a lump there which I can feel, my GP can feel and the doc doing the scan could feel. The scan was clear. He felt it again and suggested we move to another room with a different machine. Different machine: same result. Conclusion: the lump is simply an extra strong muscle which the scanner won’t pick up on. If I’ve any further problems……etc etc. I’ve no further problems. I still have a lump. It still hurts from time to time. It’s still palpable. The scanner can’t detect it. End of story. If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

I agree sticky....I think we do go to these things expecting to get some answers (naievely me thinks) because thats supposed to be how it goes but I have come to the conclusion now not to expect alot from the consultations, examinations and so on. I have been to so many rhumy, docs appointments now that have been so contradictive that I have been soooo confused by the time I've come out it's unreal. I just go with the flow now, keep attending the appointments and hope that one day someone will make some sense out of this nonsense x Dee x0

I'm sorry it wasn't a more worthwhile appointment. It's frustrating when we're looking for answers, but only get what we already know.
All the best,

Sorry the appt was not more illuminating for you. I agree we do have a lot of expectations and hopes resting on our appts. It can make for a roller coaster of emotions.
I am defintely guilty of that.0 -
Sorry to hear your appointment didn't go well for you.I had an ultrasound on my shoulder last week (for insurance after a fall) They cannot find anything wrong as to why I am in considerable pain with it in one particular spot. :?
I've had 2 medicals, one with a Rheumy and one with an Ortho,2 very differing opinions as to what is wrong and what was caused by the fall.R.A. FMS IBS RLS IGD with honours.0 -
Hi Bubbadog
I am so sorry it's made you feel that there is nothing wrong. I thought the ultrasound scans show inflamation or something like that too :?
So distressing isn't it.
Luckily the people doing the scan were kind and sensitive at least and did their best to make you comfortable mentally and physically.
Shame they didn't do feet too though - wonder if you will have to go back :?
Love

I know I have Osteo-porosis & now Inflammatory Arthritis, but just thought maybe it would show on my wrists and hands. My left little finger and right Thumb joint are always sore so knew they where Arthritic. But your right we do go into these appt's expecting more! Need to chill and what happens, happens!0

Hey Bubba
Sorry to hear this whats the point having a letter when they do not do the things they say ,If only they new how hard it is for you just to get out of your bed most mornings they wouldn't be such wazzocks .Do you have to wait long for your next App with consultant .

So sorry you are disappointed. I suppose at least you have an up to date scan of your wrists and hands. Hopefully your feet x ray appointment will come through soon.
My hubby went for an x ray for a walnut sized hard lump on his clavicle recently. When he got there and showed the radiologist the lump she looked perplexed. Apparently the gp had asked for a chest x ray and wouldn't reach as high as the lump!!
He was not amused as he had to have time off work from a grumpy boss.
They sorted it out and a few days later he had his x ray.
To top it all off I had a phone call a few days after he'd had it done to give him an appointment to have the x ray.... when I said he had had it done on Tuesday, they had no idea.... sigh.
Good luck when you finally get those tootsies done. Joy.0 -
Hi Bubbadog,
Flower they do this all the time but you mustn't let them make you feel nothing is wrong! Clearly it is and at least the oa has shown up and that might help with some help for it maybe?
You hang in there and don't let it get you down. ((((( ))))) and a hope. Cris xx0 -
Thank you Fowls,Soretoe & Cris, It does make you wonder what these people do? Do they even read what the doctor's ask them to arrange and realise there's a mistake with the original request or are they like robots and just carry on? Nevermind I'm seeing my G.P tomorrow I'm sure we'll laugh about it!! Their proberly stepford wifes!!0
