I've been on them, or omeprazole, for more years than I can remember. When I put that question to my GP he told me they were a very safe med and risking a stomach bleed was a very unsafe thing to do. Having said that, I think - but do check this out - that it would be OK only to take them if you're also taking the NSAIDS.

if i can just add my tuppenceworth. i dont think that its good to take lansoprozole long term if there is no actual reason for taking it. reason? well its suppressing the production of normal digestive juices etc and so would affect lots happening in the stomach and gut that are a normal natural part of human digestion.

just saying cos you dont take a pain killer if you dont have pain so why take lans if there is no medical need???

    Hi Paddy,

Long term use hasn't done me any harm though I am now on nexuim and have a lot of problems with the top end of my digestive track via the crohns.

Why not only take them if your having pain and have to take the pain meds? They should be an hour before but are instant and not accumulative. I would do that but just check with the gp its ok to take them that way. Cris x

    Hi
I can only put my own personal opinion forward. I've been taking them for a few years now but also take naproxen and would rather chance the side effects than an ulcer !!!
    Check with your GP

villier - your comments are genius inspired this morning to my ears!
my mum takes a huge amount of tablets, some needed to live and others for things she worries about. she is a lansoprozole loyal and despite her multiple qualifications in health and nutrition she was struggling to understand what i was trying to tell her about them causing suppression of natural gut processes. however, she does have a b12 deficiency which is just recently diagnosed and is in a bit of panic about this as both her mother and her aunt had pernicious anemia. i did not know about lans being a possible cause of this. thanks for adding those few words so that i can now do a bit more checking and let her know. she doesnt actually need the lans as the pills needed for a lifeline are not damaging to her stomach and she takes an excess of the others because i think there is a bit of an addiction going on

I've looked this up and read that over two years is long term. As I've been taking it this long am going to ask for a blood test to check my levels. So thanks for this villier.

    NHS Guidelines on Vit B12

Adults need approximately 0.0015mg a day of vitamin B12.

If you eat meat, fish or dairy foods, you should be able to get enough vitamin B12 from your diet.

If you take vitamin B12 supplements, do not take too much because this could be harmful.

Taking 2mg or less a day of vitamin B12 in supplements is unlikely to cause any harm.

although you should get vit b12 from food if you are of normal health that is ok. however if your system is compromised, you are older or taking something that prevents absorption of nutriets (lansoprozole) then you may not get adequate amounts of b12

I have been taking Lans for 13 years, 2 per day, 0ne at night and one in the morning. I was put on them after being rushed in for a stomach hemorrhage, and Barratts esophagus, No side effects whatsoever.
I do eat for my heart, which is all the right things, I take folic only a a supplement, I do eat tuna 4 times a week though.
I think they are safe as houses, but always bear in mind, we are all different.

As a matter of interest, arfaitis, is that full strength lansop? I ask because when I needed more than one a day I was transferred to omep on the grounds of 40 mg of omep was OK but 60 mgs of lansop wasn't. (It more or less does the trick for me.)
