Help - I'm new to all of this!

Hello there - I've just been reading the postings and there are some really interesting topics and even more importantly, some lovely-sounding folk!
I didn't join the forum before - I think because it meant I had to admit to my RA and I'm struggling to accept it and make changes, even though I'm not nearly as bad as some.
I have been on Sulfasalazine since March but my GP has just prescribed Amitriptyline. I only have to take a low dose (20mg per night). Does anyone else take this and is it ok?
It says on the label to avoid alcohol. I don't drink much but I do enjoy a glass of wine with my friend on a Thursday. Do you think this will be ok or should I abstain altogether? I would like to hang on to at least one bad habit if I can!

Hi Pauline, and welcome to the forum.
You are right, there are some lovely people on here. They are very caring and helpful.
I don't take Amitriptyline, so I'm afraid I can't advise you, but I'm sure someone will be along soon who can help.
Wishing you well,

Hi Pauline
A warm welcome from me too! It's perfectly understandable not wanting to admit the arthritis, I did that for years but it didnt go away :? As it is, the really lovely thing about here is that we all understand, there's loads of different types of arthritis and severities but it's not really about that, it's about living with it and how it makes you feel and quite often, those two things are remarkably similar for many of us.
I can't answer the booze question because I don't know but my guess is so long as it isn't a Thursday binge of 2 bottles and so long as your meds don't say 'absolutely no glasses of wine with firends ever' you are probably safe!
Love LV xxHey little fighter, things will get brighter0 -

 Please may I come and live with you, LV, and please could the two-bottle day be any day except Thursday (my meth day)?
Seriously, I'd check out the amitryp, Pauline. It might simply be the KO factor but it's possible there are other interactions. If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Hi Pauline
Welcome to the forum from me too.
I have just started taking amytrip only a few months ago only 10mg each evening, but I have been taking other meds that say do not drink alcohol for a very long time. To be honest I do not drink anyway only on the odd special occasion and would only have one glass (would fall on floor with any more )

You'd be welcome Sticky, especially if you can help in dealing with sulky men...I suspect the answer is two bottles of wine but not at present for me, damn!Hey little fighter, things will get brighter0

Thank you so much for all of your replies - I'm not sure I'm much further forward on the wine front but I've laughed out loud several times so that's got to be good!!
I think I'll wait until the med has settled down a bit and then give one glass a go. If I'm dancing on the tables on that well hey ho - I'm a cheap date and my husband will be delighted! [im g][/img]

Unfortunately, Pauline, I think you're more likely to be sliding under the table, asleep, than dancing on it. (Still cheap though )If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Hi Pauline and welcome I myself have not been here long you are correct there are a lot of lovely supportive people around, sorry can't help you on the RA as it is OA I have but there are a lot of people that can.
Amitrip I have been on to try and make me sleep so was a low dose. It was my friends birthday a few of us went out for dinner, so going with the flow had a couple of glasses of wine, had a great night came home went to bed got up in the morning and thought what the.... had no PJ's on hall carpet was wet and PJ's were lying wet on bathroom floor [text deleted] living on my own had to do some investigations........... well apparantly what I must have done was got out of bed went into kitchen filled wash-up basin with some water(wonder if my eyes were open) taken it into hall and decided I was at the seaside and needed a paddle with PJ's on, so must have decided PJ's gotta come off before I go to bed ....lol I can picture it, you won't........ me in the nuddy.
Anyway that is my story of Amitrip but everyone is different and I have the weirdest body regarding meds.... oh gosh the stories...hope you can get a fine balance, I'm like you don't drink a lot but require the odd schooner or two......haha when my friends are around and the only vice I have hope to see you around......tc...Marie xSmile a while and while you smile
smile another smile and soon there
will be miles and miles of smiles
just because you smiled I wish your
day is full of Smiles0 -
hi and welcome I don't know the answer to the alchohol question but hope that the amitriptyline helps0
-
My friend has taken Amatriptalyne for many years for ear pain to help her sleep, on the nights she fancies a tipple she doesn't take the pills, never seems to do her any harm0
-
Thank you for all your replies - they are really appreciated. AND...after reading Marie's antics when on Amitrip I don't think I'm brave enough to try a tipple whilst on it ha ha!!
I think if I ever am tempted I will just miss that nights dose as that appears to have worked for some.
Oh for the days when the only consideration was what shoes went with my outfit!!!0 -
Welcome to Arthritis Care Forum Pauline! Hope you get to enjoy it as much as I do! It's my daily fix for the day with support and laughs. If I didn't have it I know I would be seriously low and hate to think about what sort of state I would be in. (*deep breath!) Anyway no dwelling, you have made a good move joining the site. As for Amitriptyline I've been on it a long while now and I take 80mg at night, it does help me get a good nights sleep. Welcome again to Arthritis Care Forum!!0
