Hi my names Angela and I just found out Las week I have arthritis in my hips and pelvis.I loved to go running and keeping fit on my wii and sumba.I asked my doctor about running and was told that this was high impact exercise and would inflame my joints.I started to go power walking but this does not make me feel like I've worked out.Could I treat ,myself once a week doing a 2mile run and can I still do zumba.Any information would be greatly appreciated.
PS I also go on the crosstrainer but can't seem to get sway with that.
Thank you :-) x

Hi Angela
Thanks for your question.
In general running is best avoiding if you have osteoarthritis in any of your leg joints. With the Zumba, it depends how much twisting and turning is involved in the dance.
If you haven’t already, it could be worth seeing a physiotherapist (via a referral from your doctor), as they will be able to give you individual advice on this, having found out how much the arthritis in your hips and pelvis affects you.
For general information on exercise and arthritis see our booklet at http://www.arthritiscare.org.uk/PublicationsandResources/Listedbytype/Booklets/main_content/Exercisebooklet2011.pdf and on arthritis in the hip at http://www.arthritiscare.org.uk/PublicationsandResources/Listedbytype/Factsheets/main_content/OAhipfactsheetJune2011.pdf.
You are welcome to ring us if you would like to have a chat.
All the best
