Hi Caroline
I'll be there in your pocket (although apologies in advance because there is rather a lot of me, so you will need big pockets to accommodate me and the other pocket dwellers )0 -
I'll be away that day but I will think of you and I hope he can help with some advice and maybe better meds. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi again Caroline
My earlier post disappeared when I was part way through writing it -sorry. Right, here goes the second attempt!
I'm guessing from your post that this will be your first rheumatology appt? If not, and I'm saying things you already know, then please feel free to ignore the rest of my post
If it is your first visit to rheumatology, then I would expect that, as well as seeing the consultant, and possibly a rheumatology nurse, you would be sent for blood tests and maybe x-rays (typically of hands and feet). Top tip - although I have been doing this quite a time now, I still find myself getting flummoxed in hospital appointments, so these days I go armed with a list of symptoms and any questions I want to ask, so I don't come out having forgotten half of it! I also find it really helpful to take someone in to my appointment with me, because I never take in half of what's been said  Typical questions for a first rheumatology appointment might be: "which joints are affected", "are the same joints affected on both sides of the body", "if you have morning stiffness, how long does it last", "is the stiffness worse or better after resting", "do you struggle with fatigue" .......
Although the meds the GP has given you haven't helped, the rheumatologist will have specialist meds available to him which can't be prescribed by a GP. The anti-inflamms/pain meds the GP can dispense will (at best) only ease the symptoms, whereas the disease modifying drugs (DMARDS) prescribed by a rheumatologist are intended to help by tackling the underlying disease process and slowing its progress.
I will stop now because I fear I am rambling  but one final thing to say - inflammatory arthritis can be tricky to diagnose, so don't be surprised if you come away from your first appointment without a definite diagnosis or meds to start straight away. The consultant may want to review the results of blood tests, x-rays etc and to see you again once he has done so.
I really hope the appointment is a positive one.
Thinking of you.

Hello again Caroline
Glad you found my ramblings helpful
Really hope it goes well - and I can see why it will be strange being seen by the consultant you used to work for. I guess that could make it either easier or more difficult. Hopefully the former!
Will be thinking of you.
