I've done my ribs in again.

A couple of months ago now I pulled some muscles on the right hand side of my rib cage by shoving the Clatterator (my rollator) in and out of Daisy (my car). It cleared up in due course but now I've gone and done it again, this time on the left side and it's hurting to breathe, cough and laugh. I'm rather partial to the first and last of those activities so life is somewhat extra uncomfortable at the moment. Dammit. I know, however, that in due course it will clear up so that is a Good Thing. DD

Please be careful, its so easy to fracture a rib and if you are hurting so much I think you really need to visit A&E just to be checked over.

In due course, in its own good time it will clear up and that is a Good Thing. Right now it's hurting and messing you about and that is a Bad Thing. It's a Bad Thing on top of a lot of other Bad Things that have been messing with you recently.

If it were most other people I would, like Wall1409, be telling you to get thee to a doc. However, you know your own body well. You now know pulled rib muscles all too well  and I'm sure that's all (hollow laugh) it is.

You know the score - dullers and rest and a drop of something to take your mind off it later on. ((()))

Thank you Wall, Sticky, Villier and jillyB1 . Me being me I shall give A&E a miss as that will be occupied by the amateur sportsmen who love to keep 'em busy come Saturday afternoon (not to mention children doing what children do and other people being idiots - sorry, I mean having accidents). We are planning to go round to friends' tonight and we've just discovered that my ma's phone may not be working. Mr DD rang me on his mobile, I rang him back to say it seemed not to be working to find he has his phone on voicemail. Genuis.

This does feel identical to what I did last time, and a diclo and a couple of co-cos have eased things. I will, however, seek adviced if it gets worse. DD

    Hi DD
    Normally I would say go to the GP's but you know your body and you've done this before.....even if it is a cracked rib.....its not much sorer and they still cant do anything for it....except what you are doing....p;ainkillers {sorry dullers} and rest {I hope :wink: }
I know how sore it is and the main thing is to remember not to shallow breath even if it does hurt. Thats a good way to get pneumonia....Sorry I'll shut up now!!!! I know....I can hear you "Some chance""!!!!!!!

Sorry to hear this DD. I like Barbara's suggestion of heat, it always helps me. That and a drop of liquid refreshment.

    Hope it heals soon.

I forgot to say that I have been doing the heat thing by clamping a hot water bottle to my side (with a towel in the other hand to mop up the drippy rest of me) and yes, it's helped. I will take one to bed tonight and a big towel. I will also diclo and co-co again as they do make a difference. I know it will get better in time and sincerely hope it will be sooner rather than later (what with the approaching surgery). DD

Oh dear, DD. It just goes on and on sometimes, doesn't it? Rib problems are so painful and we do need to breathe! I can't add to the advice above, but just want to say I hope it eases very soon and things generally pick up for you.

I hope you enjoy a lovely evening with your friends and manage to get some sleep tonight. Thinking of you.

We didn't make it to our friends. Mr DD delivered my mum safely home where they discovered that her land lline wasn't working. She became (understandably) very upset by this and he was absolutely lovely in reassuring her, sorting stuff out with BT and re-teaching her how to answer her mobile. As a result of this he was back far later than we anticipated so I texted the friends and cancelled our visit. We will make it up to them before my wrist surgery.

Tomorrow we will be scattering his mum's ashes in her back garden, mingling them with those of her late husband. She has been residing on our coffee table - he brought her to our home on what would have been her 92nd birthday. I'm glad she's been here, at least she's had some company. Ye gods, the past five weeks have been exceeding strange. DD

I don't know about the rest of you but the weather here is ATROCIOUS. It's rained non-stop for eight hours, it's still tipping it down, it's cold and the paths etc are a nightmare with wet, slippery leaves. We have the lights on because it's so gloomy. :(

One o'clock is the appointed time to decant MIL. We will be a sodden little group of three, her two sons and myself. There is a litle uncertainty as to where they scattered their father (near the garden pond is agreed but the precise spot is not) so hopefully we will place her in his general environs. We may then adjourn to the Plump Feline for some 'refreshment' but there again we may not.

The rib is making its presence felt but it's better than yesterday (it's amazing what a bit of sitting around can achieve). I rang my mum this morning on her mobile but couldn't raise her. I began to fret but then it turned out she had dropped the phone while coming down the stairs, the battery fell out as it bounced down six or so steps and it took her some little while to find the two parts and re-assemble. Her eyesight is failing thanks to macular degeneration so hats off to the old girl for managing this. Despite having numerous bags and pouches for it to drape about her person for safe carriage she decided to carry it in case she fell down and broke it. She didn't fall but still managed to 'break' it. This is the woman who has spent the last seventeen days telling me how to do everything and to always have my phone in my pocket and then breaks her own rules. I would laugh but I'm lacking the energy.

Thank you, everyone, for your kind messages of support. It has been a ghastly time one way and another and we're not at the end of it yet. He began to talk a little about finding his mum and the events that unfolded on September 29 - we haven't had the time or space to mull things over so hopefully we can do so now. In another sixteen days I will be rendered useless for at least a fortnight, and semi-useless for another two weeks after that. Ye gods. :? DD

We have abandoned the scattering. MIL hated rain and gloomy weather so it seems to be very remiss to do it on these conditions. She will stay with us here for at least another week.

Hileena, Ma's landline is still out of action and probably will be until at least Wednesday. BT said they would send people out within three working days so we assume that means from Monday onwards. My lunch is arriving - I have to go! DD
