heavy menstral bleeding after steroid injection

I started my period last tuesday the day before having both my knees injected. 7 days later (this morning) I woke to what can only be described as a puddle of blood. concerned I did a basic google search but didnt really find an answer as to why I may be so randomly bleeding for so long and so heavily then it hit me to search for a connection with the steroid injection and found many hits from women complaining of the same thing, some were on day 40+ of continuous heavy bleeding.
Im furious this wasnt mentioned to me before, its obviously a pretty common side effect but my drs didnt tell me anything about the injection besides the fact it may or may not help my knees!! so far im in less pain but had I have known there would be no way id have had it, Id rather the painful knees then constant blood loss and the inevitable need for iron tablets and unwanted side effects that they cause.
has anyone else on here faced the same problem? if so how long did it last?
I shall be booking in with my gp today to see what can be done but im not holding out much hope, its not like they can remove the injection!

I've had numerous injections into my knees and never once had this so I'm afraid I cannot help. The injections never gave me much in terms of relief from the pain but everyone varies in how they react to the injections. I would sound a note of caution about the interweb - not everything you read on there is true; one woman's 'flood' is another's 'light day'. I hope the GP can help. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi
I've had quite a few steroid joint injections and steroid general injections and I have never noticed either affecting my period flow, length or timing. I've also had steroid tablets and again no impact. It's never been mentioned to me either. I hope the GP can advise you, do let us know how you get on.

I'm another who never had any problems pre-menopause. I think you're doing the best thing by checking with the GP who will have more info than us. (Real info as opposed to web info. I've checked on NHS Choices and also on Arthritis Research and neither of these reliable sites list heavy bleeding as a side-effect though AR does say it might interfere with the menstrual cycle. If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

thanks yes I took that into consideration, theres not just a couple though ive found loads of different posts from different people complaining of the same thing. Im going through a maternity pad every hour which is more then I bled after having my babies, its awful. My periods have always been the same, last 4 days start to finish and regular as clockwork only one 'heavy' day on day 2 so this is not normal at all. The thought I could be bleeding like this the whole time its in my system is quiet depressing. I guess all I can do now is hope the dr can help or it just stops.0

Hi Jennax. Do hope your Dr has managed to help you. That's the last thing you need after having injections as well. Like you, think perhaps someone should have mentioned it to you beforehand. Take care and hope things improve soon. Beryl0

Hi Jenna,
Sorry you're having such a rough time at the moment. Heavy periods are a right nuisance. I've had many steroid injections in my history of arthritis, but none seemed to interfere with my cycle, though things might've been different had I not been on the mini-pill at the time. I hope your doc's able to advise you soon, perhaps to include prescribing a different type of iron tablet if need be.
Best wishes,
PhoebePsA (psoriatic arthritis) and other things since 1990. Happy to help when I can :-)0 -
Just thought I would chip in here!
I have a mirena coil so very little/no period at all but the month after my spine injections I had a "normal" period. So for me a very heavy one. I hadn't thought about it before - but I read this and then remembered it! I am back to normal again now.
There's my twopenneth worth anyway!0
