revision surgery

Hi everyone. I am a new member and looking forward to sharing experiences with people on here. i had left and right THR last year Feb right and Sep left). My right hip has never been right since surgery and whenever I seemed to be getting better things became more difficult pain and mobility wise. So I am currently waiting, after months of tests etc for revision surgery. i am now going in on the 20th, having surgery on 21st and will be in over Christmas! This date has only just been changed, I had been told the 15th- so that is a bit of a blow. Has anyone else had problems with dates being cancelled/ changed etc.
Also would love to hear from anyone, particularly hip patients who have had revision surgery. How did it go/ How was the recovery different? Just to hear other peoples experience of it would be very helpful.
Not sure where to post this- so hope this was right!
Take care and best wishes to everyone

Hello sdw72. I'm sorry about the THR problems. I've not had a hip revision but I've had a knee revision and there were no real problems. I know a knee revision is a longer op than a normal TKR and the prosthesis is much longer but the recovery was almost exactly the same. I don't know how it works for hips though.
When I had one of my THRs I was in hospital over Christmas. The food wasn't too good, the sherry (yes ) was doled out in rather large quantities, given that we were all on pain meds and we got a lovely visit from an excellent local choir singing carols.
I hope it all goes well for you.If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Oh SDW
I AM so sorry your surgery has resulted in the need for revison and especialy that it will be over the Christmas period
I have no personal experience of revision, but if you take your laptop/device in with you we will be 'with you' in spirit to support you.
Love and hugs (and welcome)

Hi sdw,
I am so sorry that first you had to have both hips done and second that you now have to go through a revision on one. I am unable to to help, I had my left hip done 18 months. Just wanted to let you know that we will all be here for you.
As Toni has already said take in your lappy if you have one and we can keep you company whilst in there. (if you dont have one, try and borrow one from someone)
I hope everything goes well for you this time. And make sure you keep us informed.Karen xx0 -
Thank you stickywicket, Karen and Toni. I will be taking a laptop with me so look forward to keeping in touch. Not expecting too much from the Christmas dinner to be honest but will make the most of it!
My name is Simon by the way. will appreciate the support as won't get the chance to see most friends/ family over that time. My partner will be coming up here Christmas day but other than that it will be a little lonely as family etc live a long way from here or obviously have plans of their own. Should get to see a few people for New Year though but doubt I will be partying much!
i guess in our situations we are often at the mercy both of our health, and then the health service! Ultimately glad to be having the surgery though and next year can still be one to look forward to.
take care and speak again soon0 -

It certainly can, Simon. Hang on to that thought. My knee revision is great. If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Hi,
I have had both hips totally replaced and both revised, left one 3 times, right twice. The're pretty much the same as the first time around to be honest, treat them just as serious and do your exercises. My recovery period is always 3 months on crutches.
I seem to have at least one revised every 5 years these days, that's probably because I had them done in my teens and early twenties so wore them out quicker.

Hi sdw72
Sorry I wont be much help, but in the near future I have to have both THRs...I am terrified and I dont mind admitting it.
What a rotten time you have had, I just hope that the revision goes well for you.
And has the others have said, we will be with you in spirit....you take care xxLove

Hi everyone. Sorry I havent been in touch. My laptop decided to stop working shortly before going into hospital. the op went ahead on the 21st and I was actually discharged early- got home yesterday afternoon. Really struggling at the moment. Relieved to be home and to have had the op but finding the post op pain and cramps etc very uncomfortable paricularly in bed at night.
I know i am heading for recovery now but I had forgotten what these first few days at home were like. having said that today things were better than yesterday and if that continues , however slowly, then I will be happy.
laptop will be fixed in New Year but will try and post before if i can. A happy Christmas to everyone and sending best wishes and healing thoughts to all. To barbara too, i understand your worries about the operations, do you have dates for them? i hope the fact that there are many people here, including myself who can help share their experiences, can at least make the process a little easier for you and try and prepare you as much as possible. Surgery does make a huge difference to peoples lives, I hope it does for you.

Hello! It's good to hear from you again and I am pleased that all went well for you. Now starts the hard work, yes? Surgery is an assault on the body and it takes time for the muscles etc to heal so yes, life will be uncomfy for a while but that should lessen day by day (which doesn't happen pre-op, does it? ) Good luck, exercise and rest, and I hope you begin to feel the benefits soon. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Hi Simon.
Great to hear you have had the op and things seem to be going ok, I am having a TKR on Feb 12th. My G.P. has a system whereby they buy in services as and when they need them. So I am going into a private hosp, I know a few people you have been to the same place and everything has gone well. I am looking forward to post op when I can make my life back togeather and start enjoying retirement again, Happy New Year. Barry.0
