Have just been told need operation on thumb joint whereby the trapezium bone is removed and replaced with a tendon from your wrist. Has anyone had this surgery -good or bad results? Would be grateful for your comments. Thanks

    Hello

I had this done last February. Bearing in mind, everybody's different of course - the pain I used to get at the base of my left thumb has gone. I did need some help at home, having to manage with one hand, and I was surprised by how bulky the cast and dressing was in the first week. It's a good idea to have some very baggy sleeved clothes. I also had to wear elasticated waist trousers as I couldn't fasten a zip.

I think we all know when we've got to the stage where surgery is the only option and I was only too happy to have it done. If you've got any specific questions, please get back to me.

    Best wishes, Shula

Hello BABSE, it's nice to meet you. I apologise because I can't help but there is a fairly recent post on Working Matters about a similar (if not the same?) op. I think the lady concerned has had this done and it's had a huge impact on her life due to her career. I am not aware of your age or circumstance but for me surgery has always been a positive because it is designed to help: OK, the outcome may not be perfect but help is the basic idea. I wish you well. DD
