Hi does anyone know how sick notes work as I was signed off work from 2nd Jan for 3 weeks till my hospital appointment which would of took me up till 23rd Jan. I just went to the jobcentre and handed my note in to say I'm not available till then for work and have been told it only covers me till the end of today, as of tomorrow I have to make myself available for work again and have been put on a course for next Tuesday yet I still have 2 weeks left before my hospital appointment I have never had a sick note before. I was also advised if I still can't work before then I have to get another off my doctor again I am very confused now.

For the first 7 days you have to "self certify", this involves filling in a form you can get from your GP surgery (hospitals don't do them) and handing it in. After the 7 days you have to get the GP to sign you off. At my surgery this involved phoning the surgery, explaining what was wrong (TKR) and asking for a sick certificate. They asked me how long I wanted to be signed off for (!) so I just said the 6 weeks the hospital consultant had said. The receptionist got the certificate from Dr and I just had to collect it (actually sent my husband) a couple of days later. There are some bits on the form to fill in - NI number etc, then you just hand it over. Some GP's may want to see you rather than just signing the form.

Edited to add. If it is a GP's sick certificate you handed in to the job centre and it said 3 weeks from 2nd January, then you are not allowed to work until 23rd January. If it said 3 weeks from some earlier date, then they might be right. If it's a self-certification form you handed in, then you need to see your GP about getting a sick note.

If it says 3 weeks from the 2nd Jan then thats what it means.....sounds like job center don't know what there doing.

Don't forget if you need another one to get it dated from when this one runs out. I didn't hand mine in to job center when I needed them I used to have to post them off, then they would write to me when next one was due.

Hope you get it sorted okay.

It seems my advisor is making me go back to work as of today cause I told him I hadn't looked for work during the period before my sicknote started as I was unwell he has made me use the sicknote for that period and now the doc wont give me another one till that runs out so no matter how bad I feel I am now forced to work the 2 weeks that my sicknote covers me for I think it is really out of order as he shouldn't of been allowed to do that, and also to point out he said the form he filled in only covers me for 2 weeks yet my sicknote covered me for 3 weeks.

This sounds well out of order, if not illegal. This is the last thing you want when you are sick! If the Doctor has written 3 weeks FROM 2nd January, no jobcenter twit can decide it was for a different 3 week period. The advisor is on very dodgy ground, and you should point that out to him. I'd suggest you go to Citizen's Advice for some backup, but it all seems like too much stress when you are not 100% fit. Would the doctor's surgery be able to make a phone call to the jobcentre explaining that they are wrong in the way they are treating you?

That's what I thought so I think I am gonna take it up with CAB in the morning as I only volunteered to do the course as I thought at least that will be a bit easier on me at the moment as I have to show I am looking for work,I want to get back to work I just need to get an idea on what I will be able and not able to do once I have been to the hospital so I know what work would be suitable rather than start something I will not be able to cope with.

I am not 100% sure on this from what I can gather, if you are issued a sicknote, from the day it starts and for the whole duration, you are not allowed to work as I believe it has complications with regards to insurance. I know my employer states they are not allowed to have people come into work unless they get the doctor to cancle out the sicknote, even if they are hapy and feel well enough to return.

I would escalate straight away to a more senior person at the JC. I would also ask if the place that is conducting the coarse has insurance in place that would allow you to attend when you are on a certified GP sicknote.

    Shandy

This takes me back to when i first applied for ESA and had to send in sick notes whilst appealing. I always went to my doctor and made a note of when it covered me till and then used to get a letter from DWP before then saying "your current sicknote runs out on blah blah" and id be like how did that happen? Is it to do with you can self certify yourself for the first 3 or 4 days, i dont know.....I know its dam confusing and your so called advisor shouldnt be hounding you to go to a course you volunteered to do can you remind him you did volunteer and ask him why he or she is being so aggressive?

    Good luck with it all
