hi all
just herd the news this evening & talking about children missing breakfast before thay go to school.
said at least 25% of kids miss breakfast and then cant consentrate on there school work.
a few councils are paying or subcidizing for kids to have that important meal. when asked a lot of the kids said they were hungry.
its such a shame to think all these kids dont get that important meal in the morning,
when i went to school i always had a breakfast, ceral, porrage, toast.and the free small bottle milk about 11 am.
do you think its the sign of the times --we are in to much hurry or just
not bothered any more.
so sad kids are hungry do hope something gets done about it..
do you agree!!! mike26
anyway

I think it's really sad that some parents can't get their kids up in time to have breakfast and be on time for school,a sign of the times most definitely .Mig0

I totally agree. I'm a teacher and I'm shocked at how many of my class (8 year olds) come to school on empty stomachs. How can they learn? I couldn't face seeing them hungry so now am buying them food. I have a stack of apples and bananas at the back of class and they know if they've not eaten before school they can help themselves. I'm a bit uncomfortable with having to provide it, but the alternative (hungry kids) is just wrong.
Why aren't they being fed? For the kids I teach, poverty is a huge factor.0 -

Im sorry but I dont buy this that a child coming to school cant even put a slice of toast in the toaster or grab an apple....Either that or the parents arent giving them breakfast but why should the government pay out all this when they are cutting so many benefits elsewhere?
You can buy dirt cheap bread and food nowadays there isnt an excuse and as me good old dad of 80 says he often went out the door with a piece n jeely and it never did him any harm....

Sadly it is true that so many children go without breakfast of any description for a variety of reasons. I find it so hard to get my head around this but it is true.
There are some truly dedicated teaching staff out there who are prepared to pay themselves to provide a breakfast for the children so they feel comfortable until lunch time to learn and be in a better frame of mind, generally. You should not have to do this though.
Yellowfish, thank you for caring. You really are a wonderful, loving teacher.

I really don't understand why schools have to provide breakfast to children, If you choose to have children they are the parents responsibility to feed ,clothe etc.
There is plenty of cheap food available in supermarkets now, they all have their budget ranges.
I had 4 sons aged between 3-13 when i got divorced from their dad.
I had to survive on Income support and child benefit and they were all well fed, a good breakfast, lunch if they were at home or school dinner then a cooked meal in the evening.
Tesco had just started to bring out their value range then.
I sound like a right misery but I'm not........I think people don't know how to budget any more.

When I was young my mum made us cereal in winter it was with warm milk and we would sometimes be given an egg flip ( made with raw eg,milk and sugar beaten together). Like you Gilly I had 3 young children to bring up on my own they had home cooked meals fruit and yogurt etc from. I was shopping from I think it was kwicksave at that point.0

My son used to be a headmaster and now has opened a school to teach teenagers careers. He has always had children turn up saying they were hungry. He, and other teachers, often buy food for these kids, who say there is no food in the house. A lot of the pupils' parents are out of work and spend the money they get on cigarettes and drink.Christine0

That is how I understand it to be in some families. There is no food in the house and the children are turfed out very early and cannot get back inside until quite some time after school has finished. In many cases it is not the child's fault. I find it awful to hear these stories. A librarian I know in a school opens up early for them to come in to be warm. She says some children do not hurry home after school but hang around in the playground as there is no one at home.

I'm definitely feeling this one! I teach 5 year olds, and we often have children arriving who haven't eaten, and it certainly affects their learning and sometimes their behaviour. We too offer fruit and milk, and it has sometimes happened that they arrive without their lunch and I've ended up giving them mine.
Of equal concern are those poor wee mites who have no hat/gloves etc in this bitterly cold weather- they arrive in just little jackets and their hands are red raw- so now we also keep a stock of spare gloves and warmer jackets for them to wear at playtime.
I think part of the problem today is that many young parents have simply never learned to parent in the way that we did when we had extended families around us and learned by being a part of them. Lots of schools now run some form of parenting groups, but it's hard to involve those families who would most benefit from it.

Aw, Deb it is appalling to hear all this. No warm outdoor clothes either. There are certainly different priorities today it would seem. I would have gone without, to feed and clothe my children appropriately in cold weather. You teachers do such a lot to help these children. Thank you. It must break your hearts but at the same time you must be cross that this happens.

When I was a kid, many, many moons ago! My mom would get me & my sister up at 6.30am of a morning so we could get dressed, have a wash ect and have breakfast cereal or porridage in the winter and make sure we got to school on time as we walked to school. Now adays I see my neighbours rushing out the door and driving their kids to school!! What happened to walking to school and catching up on the gossip with your mates? And when I was at middle & high school I used to lump my chello with me! That was heavy!! It is a sad sign of the times.0
