Have had a dip fusion recently which is coming on nicely, in between the other joints have been up and down, anti-inflams been keeping things at bay until now, the base of my thumb is so swollen and sore and nothing seems to be reducing the swelling, would love your input....Marie xx

Hi Marie, sorry you're having problems.
I can't really help, but since my wrist fusion, my wrist has been fine, but the rest of my hand, especially my fingers, has been pants! I'm currently having physio for it. My grip is worse than it was before the op. (I was told that would be improved) My fingers are all painful and swollen (more so than before) with a lot less movement.
The Physiotherapist says it's probably due to using the hand differently since the op. Or it could just be the arthritis progressing! I personally think it's from being in a cast for 10 weeks. Who knows?
Have you seen a doctor? I think you should.
I truly hope things improve for you soon.

I think the same as numpty - I reckon you will be using the rest of your joints differently and they are complaining because of it. I also agree that seeing your doc would be a good idea, if only to put your mind at rest.0

Sorry Marie. You know what I'm going to say, don't you? I'm very much with the others. Numpty speaks from experience and makes perfect sense. The only thing I would add is that I usually find I flare slightly after an op. One or two steroid jabs sort me out. Given that you can't see a doc until after the weekend, could you try strapping it up, in the meantime, in its most comfortable position, so that you can't use it. (It's amazing how much we do use them.) It might help a little. If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Hi, I concur with the others but another thought has occurred to me, could you increase yout anti-inflammatory med? I keep my diclo to one per day (I am allowed up to three) so I can increase when necessary. Other than that maybe icing the joint may help? I used to have a special bag of knee peas in the freezer (clearly marked so they would never be eaten!) or wrap ice cubes in a T towel and rest your hand on them. ((())) DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

I can hear the conversation in the DD household. "For your dinner tonight, darling, it'll be pork chops, jacket potatoes, red cabbage and knee peas." (Not to be confused with hip peas, elbow peas or shoulder peas.)If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Thanks girls for your input
Numps sorry to hear you are having so much to contend with at the mo hope things get better for you soon, yes you could be right over use of the other joints when finger was in splint, I see the nurse on Monday maybe ask her what she thinks.
Thanks frogmella you are probably right as I said will see what nurse says on monday
Thanks Sticky I think I have a strap thingy somewhere will look it out and give it a go, it may be the trauma of the op that has set the rest of them off .
Thanks DD I'm afraid I can't up the meds as I have been taking full amount for the past week, like yourself I usually only take one per day to keep things ticking along, I tried the ice thing last night but hasn't brought the swelling down any, will have another go today and try strapping it up as Sticky suggested.
Hope you all enjoy the rugby today and all those hunky men...................Marie xx

One icing may not have too much of an effect but repeated icing might - who can say? I reckon it's worth a go and I hope it helps. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Thanks Barbara seeing as I dont't have "knee peas" to hand ice in a t-towel will have to suffice, I remembered I got stuff from the physio it looks like elastoplast but is stretchy it's to bring swelling down after an op, I have managed to stabilise the thumb with that so hopefully that and the ice will bring down the swelling...............Marie xxSmile a while and while you smile
