Hi

My brother was on the phone this morning and his partner's son is looking for a job, he had an interview in Aldi yesterday...Now get this, the conversation then turns to me and he says to my mum "a job like that would be good for Elaine"....What planet is he off? I gave up retial jobs years ago as it exasperated my arthritis in my bad knee..I do now have a new knee but can't ever see me going back to standing on my feet for 7hours a day, let alone lug about pallets, run to tills at moments notice and dismantle displays. etc...
I do want to find a job in the next couple of months but something that is possible for me to do as well....
It just bemuses me, maybe that's how people's minds work, they think "she's had her TKR so she now has nothing wrong with her"....It is doing well but I still have the aches, pains, stiffness and other teething trroubles one would expect...

I have a brother who is exactly the same. He just cant understand why I cant do various things. He seems to think that arthritis is nothing and cant be painful. Well, guess what.....He has now been diagnosed with it in his elbow. And he keeps complaining to me how bad it is.....Would you believe it.

Waht goes around come around springs to mind....My brother even when he came down right after me op was always comparing me to his gf who had had major surgery for a tumour taken out of her lung but why do that...There's no comparison TKR versus tumour on lung?

    Elaine,

People just don't know. When I posted on Facebook 8 weeks after my TKR that the consultant was happy, my photographer colleague asked if that meant we were back on for our freelance interviewing/writing jobs....and these involve travelling hundreds of miles and 16 hour days at times!!!! I had to explain that I hoped to do them next year, but right now there was no way I had the energy.

However, for the record, I'm planning on getting going on those again in the spring. And I could certainly stand on my feet all day, or do anything else involved in working at Aldi, and my op was 7 months ago. Now, I'm not you, I'm just saying that's me. So maybe don't assume you'll NEVER be able to do that sort of thing again....you might....

"It will be good for you".....mmmmm its that word 'good' again as if you would benefit in some way.

Families can drive you mad! They never see the full picture and I'm often amazed at the rubbish they come out with. My OH dad has dreadful pain in his knees but he gave me a filfthy look and said ' he had to carry on'' as if I don't! Well its all I ever have done-keep on going despite some awful pain.

If you stay at home you are somehow seen as 'not doing anything'. Take your recovery slowley and do not set yourself back.

I just don't know the logical thinking behind it..I mean i don't like retail jobs and the only one i would take would be on a till...You get treated like a piece of dirt, not that admin is much better but I really wanted out of it 8 or 9 years ago...

Well for me I doubt very much if I will ever go back to retial, standing for hours each day...It just wouldn;t do me or my knees old and present any good...I would however consider most jobs if it was a choice of working or not...
I have applied for a job with local council in post room hoping to at least get an interview...

As I cant swim properly I know my limits..

Good luck with the job application Elaine. You may not be able to do a retail job, but there's plenty of things you can do, and make a more than valuable contribution to the company as well!

Physical things are funny though, I thought I was doing really well (post TKR) - went on a 3 mile bike ride to the nearest Costa yesterday, and back again, and was fine, but today I had a 6 hour round trip car ride (wasn't driving!) to go to a funeral, and I'm in agony from the restricted position in the car - and not being able to do my stretching/rom exercises all day.

I want to go back to work but somewhere where they realise I can't kneel and do a few other things, not just yet...It's getting given that chance of course as employers will just see a big gap in CV..I personally think having my TKR was one of the bravest, best things I have done, I have taken control back of my life...
Know what you mean re sitting in car, I can't stay in back seat long at all in fact just into town and back (15mins max) hurts me a lot...I've not been any big distances apart from back to Wrightington but could sit in front with sat shoved right back...Wehn we go over bumps I still hold my knee as it feels like its rocking!!?

Good luck with the job interview, a neighbour dropped round for coffee yesterday, she had her TKR three weeks ago and is walking really well and is pain free, but csn't drive yet, guess it just proves that everyone heals at their own pace, my TKR takes place next Tues, so will be able to make my own comments then.

Everyone does heal at different paces your'e right...However I had to give up retail as it played havoc with my bad knee, I think going back to it would be plain crazy!! Besides you get dogs abuse sometimes working in shops, dont envy the people who do it just now!!

Good luck, hope to hear your story soon!
