Hi all,

To everyone that's had a THR, what prompted either you, the GP or the consultant to make the decision that it was time? How was your daily life at that point?

It was a no-brainer for me. I broke my first one. (In bed :!: Long story :)). The other just gradually packed in after I'd had RA for about 40 odd years. By the time I had it done it was all I could do to get myself from chair to loo to bed etc. Both mine have been great as have the TKRs below them.

    Hi Merry
I have also replied on your other thread.
However due to severe pain, bone on bone OA and reduced mobility my GP referred me to the surgeon who in turn, told me I needed a THR. There was no alternative, so no choice really.
I have read a lot abd talked to many people about this issue and it always comes back to amount of pain you are in, quality of life, and mobility.
    Hope that helps

    Hi Merry
It certainly wasnt my GP :x After going back and forward to him with a pain in my hip and not able to walk as far as I used to be able to {arthritis hadnt been thought about or mentioned at this time} I asked him to refer me to the hospital. The GP kept saying there was nothing wrong and writing out prescriptions for paracetamol. He said OK but its a waste of time.
I saw an orthopaedic consultant who sent me for an X Ray......I went back to his office and sat down and he said......you need 2 new hips
But but but!!!!!!!! I'm only on paracetamol.
He said you need both hips done regardless
So it was pain and lack of mobility with me.

I went to my gp, who in turn sent me for x-rays. The x-rays showed complete bone on bone. The gp referred me to a consultant who verified the severity of the x-rays. Really, thinking about it. It was both my gp and the consultant that said it was needed.

I had a lot of pain. Severe lack of movement. Walking was a nightmare. I had no real quality of life at that time.

x-rays showed my hip had deteriorated but it was the pain that finally convinced me. My Oh was also fed up with the lack of the physical side of the relationship and said I had to get the hip replaced  Me I couldn't have cared less.
