Hello, have posted on here before which was a while ago, forgotten pass words etc so just registered again. So here goes.

I have arthritis in my left hip and lower lumbar spine, had diagnosis approx a year ago as my knee was so painful and turns out to be referred pain from hip, was given pain killers etc off Doc and basically just been managing with the pain for the past year.

Lately the pain has reached a new level, now have a lot of pain in my groin, same side as arthritic hip, also sudden sharp pain down leg which sometimes causes me to stumble, I struggle to walk outside, also feel I have a trapped nerve in my back above left buttock.

Another strange thing is that when I am walking outside I find my right leg muscles seems to seize up and similar pain in my right hip as my left.It really is starting to Affect me now, get so tired after doing anything physical.

Has anyone experianced anything similar? And what has your experiance been with regards to diagnosis, do you use a stick or a crutch if so how would I go about getting one, do I just buy it or do I need to be fitted with one?

Just to add I did recieve some physio last year and a steroid injection was mentioned if I needed it, which I now feel I do. Thanks

Hi there, it sounds like ur hip arthritis has progressed quite /a bit, once you start getting severe groin pain and a giving way I would say a visit to the doc is in order and perhaps another stay to see what state its in. Ur prob getting right pain as ur body is relying more on that side now so it is complaining a bit could be it needs staying too.

Would be a good idea to see an ot or physio regards the stick as they need to be TTY he correct size for you.

crutches sound like the way to go at the moment to take some strain of your hips and knees.
its catch 22 as mentioned above. you are putting more weight onto the good side and in turn causing more pain there as well.
time for some xrays me thinks. full pelvis including sacro illiac joints. this will show if the lumbar pain is hopefully only secondary from the way you are walking.
try and get a gp appointment so he can refer you to the rhumatology dept.

good luck and keep us posted.

Hi there. The groin pain is almost certainly coming from the hip. I agree it's time to go back to the GP and see what's happening. He might ask for x-rays or refer you to an orthopaedic consultant.

A walking aid would take some pressure off the affected joint(s) but it's better to be properly measured for one rather than a DIY thing.

Thank you all for your replys, I am actually waiting on results from a ct scan with a separate complaint, I have been having rib pain from radiotherepy I had to the chest area 12 years ago , saw my oncologist last week although she is not dealing with the arthritis directly she just wants to rule out anything untoward with the ribs, so good thing is scan will show up what's going on else where, I had hinted a couple of times to my gp about being sent for scans and she told me she was unable to ,so never really pushed her on it, knowing I had an appointment coming up with my oncologist. The good thing is its been almost a week since my scan, so as regards to anything cancerous I think I would of been called by now, so will have to wait for my appointment in 4 weeks with my onc to see what is going on with the hips etc. Thanks again , it's nice to share with people who understand.x

I do hope the scan result is good as regards your former cancer. I'm not sure how much it will help with the arthritis, though. I don't think (but I don't know much about these things) that a CT scan would show much, particularly if it's only of your top half and a lot of the arthritis isn't.

I can see that you'll want to get the results sorted first but you might then have to be prepared to ask for more x-rays or scans to determine how the arthritis is. Please let us know how you go on.

    Hi Specs

    Who were you before??

I am glad they are scanning you and hope also that it is good news cancer-wise. It woudl be good too if the scans included the hip area wouldn't it?

As far as your hip is concerned I have to agree with the others - if you are going to stumble then you really ought to get some sort of walking aid. Best if poss to get the experts to help with that....they may say stick/crutch is best.

Do let us know how you get on

    Love

An Occupational Therapist would be best. You can self-refer. They'll also check out your house if you like to see if they can give you any help eg handrails, raised loo seat etc
