Went and saw the rhummey nurse yesterday and she was pleased that the steroid injection had helped up to December. Now she has put me on hydroxychloroquine/ Plaqueni. After she went through or the possible side effects and the fact it can damage your Retina my brain was about to explode with trying to take it all in. Had more bloods taken (got a massive bruise to show for it!) I realised that I hadn't had my steroid injection so asked to see Julie my Rhummey nurse and she said I wouldn't have the Steroid injection and see how this new medication goes. By the time I got home my OH was home and I showed him the hundreds of leaflets I had been given and he shared my concern about taking this new med so I rang and asked to have a phone consultation with my GP over it. And my OH got back from the chemist collecting my new med he said the chemist was worried as the medication would clash with a few of my other meds making them less effect, so not started it yet and will see what the duty GP ( Couldn't get to speak to my GP till next Friday!!) and my Rhummey nurse think about it.

Hi
I was on hydroxychloroquine for about 3 yrs now stopped as it didn't help me
I had to go to the opticians before I started on it and had to have one every year apart from that I had no problems with it
I absolutely agree with you not to start it until you have spoken to your GP it won't harm to wait and you feel happy abt taking it
They have to tell you abt all tha side effects just to make sure you are aware of the risks and they don't do it to try and scare you although it feels like it at the time
Steroid injections I think can only be given four times a year unless its injected into a joint space
Mine only last about three weeks not three months which is unfortunate
Hope you get to speak to your GP soon

I can't comment on clashes with your other meds, bubbadog. (Did you remind the rheumatologist of the other meds you were on?)
As for hydroxy itself, I've been on it for years with no ill-effects. I think it's colour-blindness you have to keep checking for but I've never had a problem. If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Bubba you are always wise to check out these things..I know the leaflets tell us all the scary stuff, but when they clash with other meds..that is a different matter...I do hope your GP can put your mind at rest xLove

I take hydroxy and have done for a few years now, with no ill effects. Just have to remember to have yearly eye test.0

Me too Amanda
with no real issues (maybe wind? ) and annual eye tests my optician does the 'amsler grid' to check for the problems that can happen while on it and I have been fine.
