Hello
Im hoping that the lovely people on here can advise me again
Ive applied for council housing and got approved to go onto their list, ive handed in my 2 most recent letters from the hospital 1 had the recent scan results in it. also handed in a copy of my dla and the letter that came from them to confirm my dla was still active.
The council use a banding system and i was initally put into the lowest, then was supposed to be moved up 2 bands because of the letters i had handed in.
Checked last week and they have not did this so went to see them twice but did not get to speak to anyone,
Anyway now my question... Got a phone call this morning from a very abrupt woman who told me that i need to be assessed by an occupational therapist before i would be moved up the waiting list,
Can anyone explain what will happen to me?
Im to get a phone call tomorrow from my housing officer but wont hold my breath
i thank you in advance for any help
Lily

Hi Lily, the council are a nightmare, they want a OT to access you to see how much you can do for yourself and also what adaptions might need to be done to any property that might become available they do this to make sure that you are housed in the right type of property straight away. the banding system is a nightmare, my brother was diagnosed with terminal cancer and it took him and his wife and a number of consultants and GP's letters and scans six months to convince the council that his application for a council property was above board, but even being at the top of the list he still had to bid on properties and the council would decide who would go and view it and then they would decide who the property would be most suitable for. The OT are really nice people so don't worry they are there to make things easier for you
Good luck

I don't know anything about council waiting lists but Occupational Therapists are great. They assess your needs and, in many cases, provide what you need.If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Gosh I didn't know OTs were employed to determine housing need either
BUT I reckon they ought to be on your side and make sure you are housed in appropriate housing (maybe groundfloor for example?)
My fingers are crossed for you

Hi Lily
I do know that the council do things differently then they did years ago, my brother tired for a bungalow from a 3 story flat, the OT went to see him and accessed how he was struggling she was very kind...he still had to wait for a bungalow to come free...but he got there in the end...I do hope you get your house, please let us know how you get on xLove

many thanks for the replies, appreciate them
Just a little update
Got a phone call this morning concerning the housing and was told that the occupational therapist had in fact looked at my latest scan results and as such does not need to see me ( i sent in the letter from the hospital with the results ) and as such i have been awarded medical priority. So chuffed
It means that i can be offered one home that the council feel is sutiable for us or if i refuse i can continue bidding but this may take a little bit longer. Either way its a result.
Got an appointment with them next week, not getting my hopes up but at least i can see things are moving forward for us.

That's a qualified success, I hope something suitable comes through for you soon. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0

Good news Lily. OT's are, as Unsure said definitely on "our" side and will come and assess what is needed in the home if you have had a major op, been in hospital for a long time or are elderly to make the homecoming as easy and safe as possible.

My son has dwarfism, scoliosis, one leg shorter etc etc.He was on housing list for 12 years, phoned and found out he had been moved down a band cos he hadnt badgered them for a property!
He now rents from a friend.0 -
Hi fibrogal1,
I am sorry to hear about your son but that was the council at fault, surely, not an occupational therapist.
It is good that he can rent from a friend.

Sorry to hear that, ive been staying with a friend for about 5 years or so and at first it was ok as only had my youngest with me so we shared a room,( i had to move as dv was involved so had to give up my home because of that)...
Because of the arthritis my youngest son (hes in his 20"s) came to help me as i could not do a lot and it was unfair on my then 10 year old, and over a year later hes still here as im getting worse, this is why im having to move out,
I have not badgered the council, i was asked to supply information which i did and todays phone call was just to confirm everything and to let me know what was happening,
I am not getting any preferential treatment, i still have to bid everyweek and my priority is only good for 6 months and if ive not managed to get a home i need to go infront of a review panal or i loose the priority.
I know where i am that if you do not bid in a year that the council can and do remove you from the waiting list and you need to reapply all over again.
thank you for the replies i do appreciate them

Hi
just an update, Had my meeting with the council and got put up 4 bands today, fingers crossed that i will finally have a settled home,
Got told that i can bid on homes that are not adapted as they can be adapted for me, so all in all a bit of good news,
Now to try and get myself back working again, been off 3 weeks and got another 2 to go before i see the doc again,
