Steroid Injection....

Hi there, hope you are all well as can be.
Well I had a steroid injection into my hip/bursa on monday and had 2 fantastic nights sleep . I could lie in an position I wanted and was over the moon but alas all has gone back to "normal" again now. Was ok when I went to bed but turned over and oooow, the bloomin hip pain was back again so had a very restless, painful night Oh well, at least I gave the injection a go. The actual injection did not hurt at all, just a sharp scratch and a few seconds of pain when the needle hit the spot but after that nothing. My rheumy is concerned about my red blood count now though, its very low now and has been falling with every blood test I have had recently so off he sent me for yet another one. I am a bit concerned about this myself as my grandad had Aplastic Anemia and had to have a full blood transfusion every week but my rheumy is investigating this so will just have to wait and see what the end result is.
Take care Dee x

I've never had much success with steroid injections (even though I did the whole bed-rest thing for the following 48 hours) so this sounds entirely normal to me. It's disappointing to say the least and I am sorry this has 'failed' so quickly. All I can suggest is resting as much as you can over the next couple of days just to see if that encourages the benefit to return. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. My Steroid injection lasted just over a month, I must have been one of the luckier ones! You should speak to your GP or Rheumatologist nurse and see what they suggest. Good luck and hope you find something to help with your pain soon.0

Hi Dee
I have had these hip injections and they didnt work for me, but the lady in the next bed was saying she gets great relief from them...I would love to know why they dont work for some...now the one I had in my hand has done the job..
I hope the pain eases up for you very soon.((((())) xxLove

Thank you all....one thing I have noticed is that it hightlighted pain in other areas and I am now positive that my hip pain is more in the groin area and not the bursa. When I first started with all this business I was suffering from lower back pain and sacroilliac pain (anyone who's had the sacro pain will know that it's a pain in the bum, literally) and this has also returned with a vengence . Oh well, seeing gp today so will mention this.

I've realised since coming on here that steroid jabs are hit and miss and I've just been very lucky that they work for me.
As for the low blood count - when mine started falling my GP was nattered but my rheumatologist said that both RA and the meds for it can cause it. He'd have just given me iron tabs but the GP insisted on an endoscopy and, when that proved OK, a colonoscopy and, because the couldn't get right to the end of the colon, a barium enema. Then the iron pills sorted it out :roll:If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Blimey Sticky, fingers crossed I have to go through non of that . It's the rheumy that's flagged the problem but I'll just have to wait and see what the recent blood test shows. My grandad had Aplastic Anemia but hoping (fingers and toes crossed, toes do this all by themselves with no effort from me ) it's not that. He had to have a full blood transfusion every week and he was supposed to stay in over night for this but he used to make the drip go faster because he was adament he was not leaving my gran over night. He used to get away with it too. No diagnosis yet for aches and pains so only on the lightweight meds at the mo (codeine, paras and Amys) The Amys have just been put up from 20mg per night to 70mg per night so hoping they knock me out for the night. I did ask if I could space the dose out throughout the day but she said no, they all need to be taken at the same time so with the 7 amys, 2 codeine and 2 paras I will be rattling to bed.

Hi Dee, you are unlucky they didn't work, though if the pain is coming from the groin area, then I suppose it wouldn't! Isn't groin pain inflammation in the hip joint? Hope you get a better night's sleep tonight.0

Hi Salamander, yes groin pain is an indication that there is a problem with the hip joint. I think the problem I'd got was because of lower back pain, sacroilliac pain, hip pain I wasn't sure where the exact pain around the hip area was . The good thing is now I'm sure it is in the groin. I had to give the injection a go though but unfortunately it failed. I saw my gp yesterday and told her that the injection had made no difference to the pain but not sure whether I need to let my rheumy know, I don't have another appointment with him now until June unless my bloods are abnormal again (something else to add to the mix) and then he said he would see me before June. All fun isn't it, NOT
Take care. Dee x0
