Hi - I was wondering what type of mattress people with RA like. I've heard that a memory foam mattress is good from some friends ( none have RA though ) . Before I fork out money for one I wondered what anyone on the forum thought . Thanks everyone :D

Thanks Villier , anything for a bit of a better sleep ! Does a topper just fit over the top of your existing mattress ? Sounds good !

Yes it does just like a mattress protector, but I'm sure some of the RA peeps will give you their input as well...........Marie x

I use a memory foam topper ; it's made the bed so much more bearable . They can be pricey , but got mine from e**y , it's 3" thick and has made a huge difference . I have RA and fairly recently had OA confirmed too . Jillyb

I have a pocket sprung and memory foam topper mattress, it was expensive but is worth the money ten fold! I sleep better than I did with my old mattress. Hope you find the right one!

It's a personal choice so go out and try before you buy - and by 'try' make sure you spend at least half-an-hour on it (an hour would be better for your final choice) sitting, lying, turning over etc just to see how it feels after you've been on it for some time. We spend hours in bed and yet choose on the basis of pushing the mattress down with our hands and / or having a quick lie-down - just how daft is that?

Memory foam can make you warmer in bed which is a drawback for me as I run 'hot'. I wish to change to an adjustable bed once ours bites the dust (which will be soon as it's over ten years old). Good luck - don't rush into a decision because it could make life more uncomfy than needs be. DD

As good quality mattresses are expensive it might be worth seeing if any firms do a 'free trial' period. Alternatively could you stay with a friend who has a memory foam mattress, or perhaps at a hotel/B&B with same to see how you get on? A memory topper can be a good solution, but you may need to change bedlinen to accommodate the greater mattress depth.
I have back problems, quite apart from recent OA difficulties, and was told by several people that mf mattress would be good. I slept a night on one and decided it wasn't for me - I found the sensation unpleasant, didn't feel supported where I wanted to be supported, and also found it made me feel uncomfortably warm. I now plan to save up for a good quality natural latex foam(ie unsprung) mattress as I have had two in the past which have been good(son and daughter in law are using the large double now and wouldn't want to have anything else)

We had what must have been one of the original memory foam mattresses. I found it great for supporting all the right bits but very heavy for my fit husband to turn round and hot. When we updated we got a good sprung mattress with the top 2" or so in memory foam and I love it. It's still a bit heavier to turn than an ordinary mattress but nowhere near as hot as the full memory foam one and much easier for me to turn over in bed.

We bought a combi mattress too. The bottom is normal sprung and then there is a lot of memory foam on top. Now we bought the most expensive one in the shop, last January, and already there is a mountain in the middle of it. It is comfortable enough for me but my hubby finds the ridge in the middle makes him feel like he is falling out of bed. So we wish we had maybe bought an even more expensive one now!

    Hi Mormodook
I did try a memory foam topper but found I could'nt turn over very easily , so I spent my money on a medium range mattress that is more soft than hard, I didnt spend a lot on it...there are places that will let you try them for so many days and send them back if not suitable.
    Love

Thank you Marie. This is so helpful. I will make all the notes and take with me next week when I go bed/mattress shopping. It looks like a new bed that had a firm base - maybe the slats are not a good idea. Thank you so much for you time this evening. Hope you have a good night...Valde

The slats aren't necessarily a problem, and if it's an IKEA bed you would be able to replace them if they were damaged/not functioning - I seem to remember they have a choice of ordinary and sprung slats. Some mattress manufacturers will recommend a particular type of base, and some mattresses need a certain type of base to avoid damage to the interior structure. It's more difficult though to see if a divan type base is in good condition and supporting the mattress correctly.
The comment about height is a good one, and you might also want to think about a 'no-turn' mattress, unless you have someone to do it for you.My current mattress doesn't need turning but it does need rotating and I struggle now(not helped by the fact it only has handles on the side not the ends as well)

Thanks all so much for your comments ..... I am definitely going to do a bit of a test ! I could be one of those tester people and get free samples ! That would be good - it's like the fairy tale " the princess & the pea" trying to get a comfy mattress
