HIP INJECTION WITH MANIPULATION

Has anyone had one of these and was it successful? Went to see consultant re gettting a THR and he appeared to be totally against it and said I was too young at 57 and it would only last 8 years. I was a bit shocked but he has put me in for the hip injection under a general anaesathetic. My gp had told me these arent very successful for advanced arthritis but I need to keep positive and wondered if anyone had had relief from this.

Hi
I have had this done twice. First time to prevent any pain in hip following an examination of my dysplastic hip to see if it was a candidate for PAO ( a corrective surgery for hip dysplasia). I had no pain after the procedure BUT I also at that point had very little pain in that hip.
I have already had a THR in my left hip (aged 40) and when my right hip became more painful last year I had an injection under GA with manipulation and arthrogram to assess the state of my hip and try to buy me some time before my next THR. I am sorry to say it was not helpful at all, and it has become increasingly painful and I am now on the waiting list for my second THR (aged 44).
I would say, try it, nothing lost and if it is successful you will have some pain relief. At least then if it is not successful you can say you have tried all other avenues.
Good luck x

Hello krisbe
I have had a few hip injections...one with a camera to see what was going on...but like NB they didnt work, but till you have them you wont know...has for the age of having THR pain is pain whatever your age...I know they think you may need a new one later but I am sure you would like to be pain free for the next 10 years xLove

Hello Krisbe
Yes, I had one of these in Oct 2010. Marvellous for two weeks and then the pain set in again. Had a THR in Dec 2010 when I was 58. Not worried about it lasting only 8 years, although I'm sure my surgeon said it would last for longer. Not being morbid, but my time might be up before my THR wears out anyway. I'm pain free in my hip now and that is what is important. All you can do is try the injection and manipulation and, if it doesn't work, then speak to your doctor or consultant again.
Good luck. Keep us informed as to how you get on.

I had this done , pain relief only lasted 48 hours unfortunately . I had a follow up appointment after 3 weeks I think with consultant & he then made the decision that only option was THR which I had 3 months later , aged 50.
If it doesnt help you ,keep a diary of your days , pain & what you can & cant do , sleep pattern etc & take it to show your consultant, it may help. Good Luck x0 -
Oh dear all this doesnt seem very encouraging. I was hoping at least someone would say it worked for them. To be honest I am dreading having a THR and would do anything to avoid it.0

Hi krisbe
I understand how you feel, I am the same terrified of surgery, I need both hips doing, and was offered surgery 3 years ago..am nearly fainted, then another consultant said he though a lot of the pain was coming from my back, I believed him because I wanted to, even though my right hip is 98 percent gone and the left one bone on bone.
If I had gone ahead with the surgery 3 years ago I think I would have been much better off.
Wishing you well with whatever you decide xxLove
