Went in last night for fusion surgery this morning and the surgeon came to see me this morning and at the last moment, noticed a scratch on my foot, right where he was needing to make the cut and he said he couldn't do the operation as there is high risk of infection with the scratch :( I was so upset but he said he will get me in ASAP with the next available space.

    Thank you.

Now I've been at home for a while, I'm not so upset and I can see his point and I'm glad he took that action.

He did tell me tho that he wouldn't be doing a triple fusion like planned. He would only be fusing my subtalar joint and to leave it at that.

The surgeon sails at my local club and I've taught his children to sail. He says if I do a triple fusion, I will find it very hard to sail as I need my mid foot joint to sail well. He says with doing the subtalar, I will only be in discomfort and it means I can sail better for longer. He did say, I would expect you to come back to me within 2 years to have the other fused.

I think maybe as I'm in my 20's, they want to do as little as possible.

    hi sailrib

I have had both heels fused , Triple Arthrodesis on both & dont understand why they would only do the main joint , chances are the other joints will need it at some point , they can up an anesthetic into that joint under xray so would show if the other joints are causing you problems & need fusing

second one had problem with leg ulcer healing before the the opperation & was just about healed but after the opperation took about 11 months for the wound to heal so think your consultant was right

hope all goes well when you have the opperation

I've had injections and it was all the three joints that were effecting me but he knows how much I love my sailing so wants to keep me sailing as much as possible.

He did say I will expect to see you again to have them fused but you should only be in discomfort for a few years.

    I'm hoping he's right. :)

Btw, this is my surgeon, anyone else have him?

I've been very impressed with him, he really knows what he's doing and I love the fact, he's a sailor as he understands my needs so much better :)
