Treatment on my Feet - Advice please

Hi everyone

As some of you may know I not only have spinal arthritis but also Fibromyalgia. I have been suffering with my feet and the pain is akin to that of walking around on tiptoe all day but it affects the entire foot. It doesnt matter if I wear slippers, shoes, trainers or go barefoot. Socks can even irritate the pain.

I have spoken to the pain specialist about this and they want to conduct a procedure on my feet to try and help with this. I am going to have patches similar to nicotine patches on the soles of my feet which have been treated with chilli. This is going to burn the nerves away from the soles of my feet then allowing three months the nerves will grow back in the hope that there will be no more pain.

I am concerned that this will go one of two ways- either the nerves will be damaged completely and I will never feel anything on my feet again or the pain will be unbearable and nothing at all will happen except more pain.

Does anyone know of this treatment or even had it done. I know its a long shot but I am concerned about this and I want to know if its worth trying.

oh ive never heard of this at all ,it will be interesting to see what happens ,i cant see how it would damage the nerve totally ,but as i said i know nothing about this and if it was going to stop pain in the feet i would have it ,im going into hospital on frideay to huve neuromas removed again ,think if there was a non invasive way available that worked id tried it ,keep us posted

    Hi Jaki

As I am going away for a few days I am going to surmise what you are talking about is the qutenza patch. I had a trial of it on my hands a few years ago for neuropathic pain, I have it in quite a few places including feet but my hands are the worst. The nurse applies an anaesthetic cream first and in my case made a template of my hands and then cut the shape on the patches then applied them to the palms of my hands and then wrapped them both in bandages, the patches have to stay on for an hour. As the hour progressed so did the pain by the time the hour was up my hands were on fire, whan the nurse took the bandages off my hands were scarlet and I couldn't get to a cold tap quick enough, how I managed to drive home that day I will never know, the pain continued into the next day before I started getting any relief.

Now on the other hand I have had more tests done and they have now discovered that my nerves are damaged at the root at the dorsal root ganglia, result is my nerves can't regenerate, I cannot stand even the slighest breeze on my hands etc as it sets my nerves off that is probably why I took as bad a reaction to the patches, there was a man in the next bed to me who had had shingles and had the patches on his side and all he felt was slight heat, ufortunately I don't know the outcome of his.

I can see where they are going with the patches as nerves do regenerate and can normally take time although not if they are damaged at the root, they certainly have not made my pain any worse I was just unfortunate in my situation.

I certainly hope they work for you as I know how much pain you are going through even putting my feet on the floor exacerbates my pain, if there are any more questions you would like to ask I will be home the beginning of next week...............tc.......................Marie xx
