Vitamin D deficiency

Following my rheumatology appointment, I've had a letter back from the hospital and all that's wrong with me is a Vitamin D deficiency; it should be above 75 and mine is 31.5.

Other than that, the wear and tear in my thumb joint and slightly worn vertebrae in my back, there is nothing else wrong with me. My psoriasis is no longer a factor so I don't have psoriatic arthropathy.

I still ache badly when sitting and am stiff moving around, so maybe upping my Vit D intake will help. I'm not going back to the doc's until I need to, which will be for a thyroid check in a couple of months' time. They evidently don't have anything to tell me so I won't waste their time. I should of course be relieved that there isn't anything wrong but still feel that if I could have been seen at the peak of my pain and discomfort the outcome might have been different.

Onwards and upwards!

I hope you find the Vit D helps a lot but, if not, don't let it rest there.

    Hi

I too have vitm d deficiency and have the tablets to take, i got told a lot of people with arthritis have this problem, i also have been told to spend at least 20 minutes in the morning and afternoon in the sunshine to store it up that way as well.

Hopefully this will help you but if if does not i would go back to the doctors and get checked out again.

    Hi there,

I've also got a vit D deficiency. I think we should be prescribed a 3 week holiday somewhere hot and sunny, on the NHS, for this problem, I know it would do me the world of good!!!! My GP recommended cod liver oil and more oily fish in my diet to help with my problem but I was told to stop taking the cod liver oil before I had recent sinus surgery so ask your GP about it before you try taking it because there may be a very good reason why you shouldn't take it, eg., it might react badly with the meds you're on. It's not easy getting 20 mins daylight where I live. My legs are positively Daz blue white... tee hee

I read that vitamin d is best absorbed as D3 - but it only gets utilised by the body with adequate magnesium levels. I felt better on D3 (2200 iu) then ran out of tablets - I will order some more.

Its interesting to read up about dosage too - there is a lot of recent research suggesting higher doses are required. Many articles link low D levels to gastro-intestinal permeability - so could play a part in keeping a good barrier.

Rather have sun than take pills though

I've got a prescription from my GP, 2 tablets twice a day. I make no apology for trying to get as much sun as I can each year (lounger in the garden, etc) because of my years of psoriasis as well. As most of my aches and pains had cleared up of course before I got this far, I can't really tell whether there's any difference. I presume my GP will do another blood check at some point, but he didn't ask to see me, just sent out the prescription. Will check when I have my next thyroid check.
