I wet the bed.

I was lying there in the early hours, listening to his regular and gentle breathing which indicated a deep and comfortable sleep, and thought 'This won't do. I'm awake, he should be too.'

I reached out and found my nearly-full pint glass of water, took a few healthy swigs, went to put it back on its coaster when my hand lost its grip, it landed half-on-half-off the coaster, tipped towards me and soaked my side of the bed, the bedside table, the floor and me. It's amazing how much 3/4 of a pint or so can spread. He snapped on his light and I mine. I headed off downstairs to get a couple of towels and returned to find him standing next to his side of the bed blinking in a rather owl-like fashion. I stripped the bed, laid a bath sheet over the wet bit, remade it with clean, dry sheets and sorted his side first. He meanwhile stood there with a fistful of toilet roll ineffectually dabbing at my bedside table. I apologised, he said it was all right and not to worry. (I wasn't worrying, I was 'repairing' things). He returned to his side and dropped off to sleep immediately. I dried off my Kindle, mopped down my light, dried my glasses, turned off the light and waited for sleep. And waited. And waited.

I suppose he was startled awake and that does delay one's reactions to things but a little more help wouldn't have gone amiss. I didn't do it on purpose (in fact I've never done it before) and I won't be doing it again. He, on the other hand, has done it a number of times and it's always me that sorts things. I suppose one of the 'benefits' of not sleeping that well is that one is in a reasonable state of alertness when things need to be done. The mattress has dried out quite well, it's all airing now with the sun streaming in on it, my pillow is nearly dry, and all I have left to do is change the duvet cover. At least that didn't get wet. I think it's time to invest in a baby's spill-proof beaker. It's all dried out now, I only have the duvet cover left to deal with but I can't face that just yet. DD

This made me laugh - been there, done that - this is why my bedside drink is in a bottle with a screw cap. I also drink water from a bottle with a lid at work too. I'm forever knocking it over - but it can't spill. If you can't manage a screw cap very easily, the sport bottles that have flip lids are good too!

More water trouble. I finally put the mattress protector in the machine, switched it on and left it to do its stuff. The cycle came to an end, I switched it off and opened the door. I went to remove it a few moments ago, it felt quite damp and I thought that was my fault for leaving it in for too long so I flopped the whole thing out onto the kitchen floor accompanied by a gush of water. Either I switched it off too early or it didn't spin. So, it's more bath towels to mop the floor, I put the thing back in machine, set it to spin and then came upstairs to get away from it.

I am making errors all over the place, due to tiredness, stress, lack of concentration. I keep telling myself to snap out of it but snap out of what, exactly? Grief is affecting me and I need to be kinder and more patient with myself, no? DD

PS The machine has just made its 'I'm done' bleeps so I'm off to investigate its contents. Wish me luck.

Hopefully, you realising this, will be the first step towards the healing process.

Oops! I can just picture Mr DDs face while standing there with the toilet roll.
You are right DD. You do have to allow yourself to grieve and forgive yourself for doing the wrong things. It's still too soon to 'snap out of it'.

I am pleased to report we had a dry night.

I had some kippers this morning for my breakfast. They were lovely, sharp and salty. I put the remainder back in the fridge and washed up the pan etc. Twenty minutes later I wandered back into the kitchen, thought 'Cor! Kippers for brekky!' and did the second lot. :? Now I feel sick. :( DD

Ohhh DD you are having a time of it :lol:
Hope you feel a bit better after your kippers now.....The joys of being a vegetarian
As for the drink.....I use a sports bottle at night. I'm not awake enough to unscrew a top and I know what happens when I use a glass  but a sports bottle even if knocked over....{and I've done that before now} doesn't spill as much.

I'll support the bottle idea :)

I take a fresh bottle of water to bed with me and usually manage without spilling any? There are sports bottle type available.

There is a cost but may save on laundry.

An alternative is a bottle of Whisky - I'll bet you wouldn't drop that one

It was his turn at 5.30 this morning! He's not functioning that well thanks to long working hours, and I'm not because I don't, period. I thought about the plastic bottle but they can be quite noisy when one is glugging - a travel mug may be another option. DD

I only use those cartons with straws yet even these get knocked over at regular intervals and they still make a mess.

I do think we women are conditioned to be immediately alert whereas men know we will sort everything out and so therefore go straight back to sleep. When next door caught fire I spent quite a while convincing my OH it was real smoke I could smell and even the hammering on the neighbours door by passers by didn't convince him at first

I have a cyclist's water bottle on the shelf beside the bed, with a spout you can pull out to get at the water - some people can do this with their teeth while cycling fast - not something I've ever managed!
I find it useful when I wake up with a dry mouth.
