Question for you gardeners out there.

Well the decking and the patio are done and now we are just waiting for the lawn to be relaid. So it is now time to start thinking of planting.
Sadly I can't 'do' the garden like I used to so now we are going for low maintenance and having mainly shrubs in the borders. OH has decided he would like some trees. I'm ok with flowers but not with trees.
So can any of you give me some ideas please? We want slow growing preferably evergreens and a variation of colours. Some tips on shrubs would also be very welcome.

Unsure - great idea colourful small acers! Red/gold
What about a dwarf budlea to attract some butterflies?? purple/lilac
You can get dwarf hydrangea too which gives colour in summer then the dead heads look lovely in winter pink/blue
