It is only few months since I was at the hand clinic and had a steroid injection into my thumb which did absolutely nothing I'm afraid, since then the rest of my finger joints seem to have got larger especially the joints on my middle finger on my right hand, it is so bad now it looks deformed. I didn't think OA could move this fast, I am now petrified  to go back to the hand clinic next month as the surgeon I see seems to be a wee bit 'surgery' happy  as she has already commented on my middle finger which is now a lot larger when she last saw it, I have a sneaky feeling she is going to talk surgery for that as well, are anyone else's surgeons 'surgery' happy?..............hope you are all as well as can be..................Marie x

    Hi Marie,
It may be the lumps are soft tissue swelling rather than bony in which case they should reduce once the inflammation is controlled.
    Let's hope so.

Hi Marie, "surgery happy"? I don't know. I guess that's what they do, so obviously they believe in it, and of course, it does help.
My surgeon has a long list of ops he wants to do on my hands. I said I wanted to wait and see how I got on after my wrist fusion. I don't regret having the fusion, it was worth it to stop that dreadful pain. But, it has affected the rest of my hand quite badly, I now have a lot less use in it, and my grip, which he said would improve, has deteriorated considerably.
Because of this, I'm reluctant to have more surgery at the moment. He's left it in my hands (so to speak), I've to contact him if I change my mind.
I think what I'm trying to say is, it's your choice at the end of the day. Your surgeon can suggest or recommend things, but what, and how much you have done, is up to you.
It's a hard decision, but one only you can make.
    Good luck!
    Take care,
    Numpty

Sorry Marie, it's me again
I would like to add, I don't imagine any surgeon would suggest surgery, unless they thought it was necessary, or would be helpful.
Sorry I can't be more helpful, I think I'm going round in circles :?

    Hello Marie
I have been shocked at the speed of my OA, but my hands are the only part of me that reacted good to the injections...I am sorry they havent worked for you, but hopefully they will try them again ...I am told with some people it takes a couple of time before they kick in....xx
    Love

Put that wine bottle down this instant, Numpty

Marie, I honestly dunno. I've had RA for over 50 years and OA for about 35 and I still haven't worked out what does what or when.

My surgeon isn't gung-ho. He does listen. Last time I saw him it was because my ancient TKR had been playing up. He asked how it was and I said actually it didn't feel bad now. He turned to the nurse and said, with a smile, "That means don't operate just yet  " He didn't. He's just monitoring it.

I hope very much that yours is just a blip but I know you'll be sensible about it. I also know that, if you say it's not good, that means it's s*dding awful so (((())))
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Thanks all, Lzzie I am not sure if it is tissue, the joints are absolutely solid and on the x-rays my hands are full of bone spurs.

Numpty, thank you I am so sorry that your hand has been affected by the surgery although you are getting relief from the pain, I am lucky it hasn't spread to my wrists yet, the reason I said 'surgery' happy was the last time she looked at my finger and said straight away oh! I can fix that and it wasn't as bad as it is now, I think she was remembering my finger fusion as she commented there very little cartilage left, I see where you are coming from it is totally up to me at the end of it.

Thank you our Babs, I can't believe how quickly this has moved on, I am so pleased you got some relief in your hands from the injections, she never gave me any indication whether she would be trying any more I will just have to wait and see.

Sticky thank you for your usual words of wisdom(and of course the hugs), I do believe the s*d***g disease is progressing, I think I have only been trying to kid myself  anyway we will wait and see what she says next month.

Thanks again all, oh! Numpty next time don't be a greedy mare pass the bottle round  xx
