Advice for starting Methotrexate injections?

Hi everyone,
I am looking for some advice if possible. I am about to start the injections for the first time on thursday and i am super nervous. I have been trying to handle them in tablet form for a year now and everytime i took them i was so ill for at least a week. I only have ever managed to get up to 15 after starting at a dose of 10, so still nowhere near the 20 we were aiming for. Everytime i had to stop and try again as i had a wee one to look after.
I have been told that the injections are easier for your body to handle and shouldnt have too many side effects. I guess i am just asking everyone to see if this is true.
I am now a single mum to a two year old and have started a degree through the OU so i am hoping that the side effects will be reduced. (dont we all?)
I just need some honest repsonses if that is possible as i would rather be prepared. Thank you guys so much in advance

I started Meth injections last year as I made the switch from tablets to injections and it was the best move I ever made.
The side effects wore off and I wasn't nearly as bad as I was before.
I still got the odd sickness and upset tummy, but ginger nuts or mints helped with that.
For me I was terrfied about doing the injections as I don't do needles very well at all, but they are actually ok once I got used to the idea!
I am now off Meth and on Sulpha as my husband and I are wanting to start a family, but the Meth injections worked much better than the tablets ever did.0 -
Hi, it's nice to meet you. I do my own meth injections (I've done other injections too) and I can understand your nerves. It's a big step to take.
I was first faced with doing my own jabs when I was put onto enbrel (an anti TNF med), they had to be done twice a week and the hospital said they would not be able to do them for me. My gut reaction was 'It's got to be done, get on with it.' So I did. I won't say that I enjoyed it but it was quite straightforward. I now do my meth once a week and humira once a fortnight. I don't struggle too much in the way of side-effects, the liquid dose is smaller than the tablet because you are by-passing the digestive system, so you can take 'less' but hopefully gain more benefit.
I was recently transferred to the metoject needles, I don't like them as much as the previous system but no matter, it's still done and dusted in under five seconds, once a week. You'll be fine, just take a deep breath, think how much your little one needs you to be as well as possible, then go for it. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. I do oral meth but I just wanted to say hello, welcome and good luck. From what I've read on here, most people seem to find the injections easy enough (despite initial wobbles ) and more effective. If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Wow thanks guys that was quick! x
i am not too worried about the actual injection themselves, well no one really wants to do it, but i did IVf a few times so have had to self inject before. Its more the side effects, i have passed out a few times on the oral ones and the feeling of sickness and sizziness sometimes stayed with me all week. so i am dreading this happening on the injections as my anxiety levels go thru thr roof with having my wee man at home with me. I keep being paranoid that i will pass out when the oven is on or fall down the stairs or something silly. I started taking anti sickness meds before taking the methotrexate and that did reduce it a little bit. but am so nervous to start as once its in ur body you dont have control over what it is going to do to you eh?
sorry i am rambling :?
thanks so much0 -

Really? That's a new one on me and must be very scary even without a small child in tow. Can you arrange to have someone with you for a few hours at first, just until you can be sure it won't happen? Or, at least, let someone look after the little one?If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Hi Poppy
I'm due to start them at the end of the month
I was a nurse for 30 yrs who always said there is no way I would ever want to inject myself until about 2 yrs ago when I was teaching little old ladies and gentlemen how to inject themselves and thought if they can do it so can I!
So now its come down to the fact I need to inject methotrexate as its known to work better than tablets I can't wait
Your Rheumy Nurse will show you how to inject and its not as scary as you think. The first one will be the hardest once you have done that you will be fine
Let us know how you get on

Yeah it tends to be the next day, well i used to take them about 6pm and wake up early either throwing up or feeling like i was about to. And the dizziness started the next day too so have arranged his grandparents to have him on friday. Fingers crossed it will be ok.
it was so scary have had to call the dr out a few times as was so disorientated. The Rheum said the injections are fine, but was just wondering if that was true. lol as you know what they can be like, easy to say when its not them eh0 -
Hi & welcome,
Like SW im on oral methotrexate 30mg a week, no side effects.
I've heard very good things about the injections from members here. It does seem it is beneficial at a lower dose so easier to tolerate.
I wanted to wish you the very best of luck with it. Please keep us posted xHealing Hugs
