We were very sad to learn that the former Manchester City goalkeeper Bert Trautmann is reported to have died today. Bert was a former German prisoner of war who made his home in England after the hostilities ceased. He initially encountered hostility himself from the local population who felt that it was too early to employ a German paratrooper shortly after him being employed by the Luftwaffe. His performances between the City sticks soon had them changing their opinions and after his efforts in the 1956 cup final, in a game where he performed heroics despite suffering a broken neck, he was not only accepted but was regarded as the finest goalkeeper in the country at that time.

I have, many a time, watched and marvelled at those clips of him throwing himself about the goalmouth with a broken neck. It wouldn't happen now - thank God!If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Oh very sad to read this as he was indeed a great goalkeeper. I watched a documentary about him recently and still marvel that he chose to carry on playing after that incident.
