Hello everyone
My name is Sarah, I am 41 years old and I live in North Yorkshire. I was diagnosed with femoroacetabular impingement in both hips and early onset of osteoarthritis 4 months ago. I visited my surgeon 2 days ago who confirmed the osteoarthritis in both hips is severe, and both hips will need to be replaced.
Hoping to have a small procedure done in the next 4 weeks which will ascertain how much joint space I have in my hips. If there is space in the joint, my surgeon will do a hip arthroscopy to remove the impingement and prolong the hip replacements, if there is no joint space I will have the hips replaced.
Looking forward to meeting you all and sharing experiences, help and advice.
Sarah

Hello, it's nice to meet you and I hope we will be able to help with information and support. I have two forms of arthritis, one of which is osteo: it's affecected both ankles, both knees, my right hip and is now in my neck.
I have read your post a few times now but I remain confused. I cannot fathom whether you already have hip replacements nor how you moved from early-onset OA to possibly needing new joints in just four months. Am I being dim? If so that wouldn't surprise me. I was diagnosed with pretty severe OA in the knees in April 2011 aged 52. I still have another year to wait for new knees during which time things have worsened considerably in my other OA-affected joints.
I look forward to seeing your name here and there and I wish you well. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0 -
Hello dreamdaisy
It is very nice to meet you too
I am sorry if my post was confusing, it's been an emotional 2 days and I am not the best person at explaining everything, so I will do my best.
I have had pain on and off in my hips for about 18 months and started with severe pain in my right hip and restricted movement in January 2013. I had a couple of falls and my GP sent me for an xray. I was then referred to the orthopaedics dept at the hospital who told me I had the pincer impingement. This was in March and in April I had an MRI. The consultant confirmed then that I had early onset of OA and he referred me to a specialist who deals with OA in young people. I saw the specialist on Friday who confirmed that the OA was not early onset but severe and I had been mis-diagnosed.
I'm waiting to have this procedure done to see if I can have the keyhole surgery which will hopefully prolong the need for hip replacements. If I cannot have the keyhole, then I will require the replacements.

Hello Sarah and welcome from me too.
I'm the proud owner of two THRs. Both are some years old now but working well still. The trick is to do the exercises before and after surgery and do very little else afterwards. Put all your energy into ensuring it all goes well.
I think you'll find us an informative, helpful bunch. If you get tired of all the arthritis talk on LWA you can hop over to Chit Chat for a laugh. I hope to see you around. Join in on any thread you like.If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.

Hello Sarah and a warm welcome from me
I am so sorry you are suffering like this at such a young age...I am much older at 63... and I have had a couple of arthroscopy on my hips and just had my first hip replaced...3 weeks ago..and I have to say how pleased I am with it...and in such a short time...believe me I was so worried about the op... I am due to have my other done in 6 months...so there is light at the end of the tunnel has they say
I do wish you well and hopefully they can delay the THR.... the reason they delay while you are young is that you could need another one in your 60s...
Wishing you well with everything...Love

Hello again, thank you for your clarification, I appreciate it. I am under some stress at the moment thanks to two recent bereavements and all that dealing with those entails - my concentration, never too good anyway, is distinctly absent.
You have come to the right place to receive support and I hope we will soon 'get to know you' better. DDHave you got the despatches? No, I always walk like this. Eddie Braben0 -
Hi Stickywicket,
Thank you for your post, it's nice to hear you say that you are "the proud owner of 2 THRs"....I was in shock when I was told that I would need both replaced, wondering how I would cope, however, reading how people cope so well with the replacements has made me feel a lot better0 -
Hi Marie,
So sorry to hear of the chronic pain that you are in. I myself do not know a lot about the hips or how OA affects other parts of the body. It's great to find a forum that offers support, advice and information. I hope that one day I can be supportive to other members and also to make new friends

Hi Barbara,
Congratulations on your new hip and I am happy to hear that all went well and you are really pleased with it
How did you find the arthroscopy? Did it help you??

Hi Debbie,
Thank you for the welcome
It was a shock at first, I am coming round to the news and determined to enjoy my days. I work full time and when I am not in pain I ride my motorbike. Strangely enough I find riding a motorbike a lot less painful then driving a car
